As part of a strong and cohesive team that works through shared values to achieve the mission of the United Way of Greater Houston (UWGH), the Program Manager will build and maintain relationships with individuals, public and private sector community institutions and nonprofit organizations in order to identify community needs, develop approaches to meeting needs, and ensure successful implementation of United Way’s mission in the community.

The Program Manager will work closely with the Mission and Strategy Team in the development and implementation of new initiatives, building relationships with targeted community stakeholders to determine the best practices for achieving highest impact results, identify effective program investments and analyze results of programming. Responsible for monitoring investment portfolio for performance, providing technical assistance to collaborative partners to ensure ability to meet various benchmarks and service delivery targets. Serves as subject matter expert in assigned initiative field (Financial Stability) and conducts research to support United Way strategic planning.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide leadership in building initiative network. Implements collaboration best practices to improve the functioning and impact of initiative work. Maintains and builds current initiatives.  Working with team, make recommendations for new community partnerships and initiatives.  Troubleshoot challenges with partners and ensure established goals and outcomes are met. Working with team, plans for collaborative partner meetings, funding processes, and other projects, including developing calendars, applications, and other tools. Identify and carry out opportunities to promote enhanced collaboration among initiative partners in key impact areas.
  • Monitor investments and promote excellent program service: Responsible for monitoring investment portfolio for performance, providing technical assistance to collaborative partners to ensure ability to meet various benchmarks and service delivery targets. Provides general and customized training to partners including outcomes management, continuous quality improvement, data management and reporting.
  • Maintain relationships with community and initiative partners to advance United Way’s mission. Build and maintain relationships with individuals, public and private sector community institutions and nonprofit organizations in order to identify community needs, develop approaches to meeting needs, and ensure successful implementation of United Way’s mission in the community. Establish and build relationships with expert community stakeholders to determine the best practices for achieving highest impact results, identify effective program investments and analyze results of programming.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in initiative field: Develops and maintains current information on needs of community as well as best practices to address needs.  Develops in-depth understanding of community resources through research, involvement in community planning and advocacy groups and other activities.  Uses knowledge to make recommendations about funding priorities, new activities, and direction. Participates in community collaborations, partnerships, and national and state organizations involved in community impact work, identifying appropriate roles for United Way. Conducts regular surveys of the national best practices and determines likelihood of successful implementation in greater Houston region. Develops expertise of initiative partners by planning trainings, sharing information, and other activities. 
  • Other activities in support of United Way, Community Impact and Community Investment: Compiles and assists in communicating outcomes and results of funded programs to the community and other areas of United Way, including the Donor Relations and Brand/Marketing departments. Provide support to other efforts that advance the goals of United Way Mission and Strategy such as: presentations and trainings to service providers and potential clients, community conversations, and promotion of key initiative activities. Performs other related duties or special assignments in support of the United Way.
  • Constituent Relationships:  Work with UWGH’s Donor Relations and Brand teams to identify, develop and implement opportunities to communicate community impact work, UWGH goals and priorities to constituents.  Be an effective and compelling communicator of the same to advance engagement and brand value.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years Expertise and professional background in strategies for increasing the financial stability of low-income populations;
  • Expertise in our workforce development system as well as a firm experiential understanding of the needs of employers;
  • Background in increasing financial stability through a coaching lens.
