The Executive Director of the United Way of the Lewis and Clark Area (UWLCA) is the leader of the organization leveraging the power of relationships and networks across private, public and corporate sectors of a three-county area (Lewis and Clark, Jefferson and Broadwater) in Southwestern Montana.

The Executive Director’s key responsibilities are Community Impact, Resource Development, Strategic Management, and Organization Management.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Community Impact

  • The Executive Director is responsible for the overall impact of the UWLCA on the community. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors to create and adapt strategies to achieve meaningful impact including fundraising.

Resource Development

  • The position is charged with driving key results in fundraising by identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospective donors and key leaders, leveraging personal and professional relationships into fundraising opportunities and promoting a culture of fundraising at the Board of Director and staff levels.

Strategic Management

  • The Executive Director serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and provides direction in policy development and interpretation. The position partners with the Board of Directors to create organizational goals and strategies to achieve those goals. The position ensures coordination and alignment of all UWLCA activities in the areas of community impact, resource development and staff alignment.

Organization Management

  • The Executive Director is accountable for building and leading a high-performing team of employees. The position maintains accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within the policies developed by the Board of Directors.

The position assesses organizational capacity, identifies gaps, directly supervises staff positions including establishing staff goals. The Executive Directors works with the Finance Manager and the Board Finance Committee to manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance and mitigate financial risks.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years of management-level experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent leadership and relationship building with donors, volunteers, partner agencies and community groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of constituents including public speaking and facilitation skills.
  • Proficiency with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook).
  • Understand the purpose and functionality of donor database software programs.
  • Ability to analyze and relate information and data to the Board of Directors, staff, and partners.
  • General understanding of coalition development and collective impact model.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with conflicting priorities.
  • Meet deadlines and accurately attend to details.
  • Experience identifying funding opportunities, grant writing and donor cultivation.
Compensation/Benefits: 

The Executive Director’s salary range is between $60,000-$75,000 depending on qualifications and experience. UWCLA’s benefit package includes medical insurance, a Simple IRA retirement plan and generous holiday, vacation and sick leave.
