Areas of Responsibility: 

Community Impact

  • Responsible for the overall impact of the United Way of the Mark Twain Area.
  • The Executive Director works with the Board to develop a strategy to enhance the impact of the United Way to the community and stakeholders.
  • The Executive Director works to establish relationships with the leaders in the community, business, government and non-profits.

Resource Development

  • The Executive Director is responsible to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors, key leader’s corporate partners,
  • working with personal and professional contacts and relationships for fundraising opportunities
  • Promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, with staff and at the board level.

Strategic Management

  • The Executive Director gives direction in policy formation and interpretation.
  • The Executive Director crafts organizational goals and develops strategies to achieve those goals ensuring coordination and alignment of the United Way of the Mark Twain Area to community impact, resource development and staff alignment in support of the Key Initiatives: Income, Education and Health.

Organizational Management.

  • The Executive Director is responsible for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within the policies set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director manages the organization’s capacity to implement strategies, establish goals, monitor budgets, and maintain fiscal responsibility.

Executive Responsibilities

  • The activity and acceptance of the United Way in the community is related to the effectiveness and the conduct of the Executive Director. There are many parts to the United Way but the public will focus on the Executive Director.
  • Take initiative and motivate.
  • Recognize problems areas and initiate solutions.
  • Assume and initiate funding sources for United Way initiatives in communities.
  • Assume responsibility for resourcing grant funding for Unmet Needs following a disaster.

Working with the board

  • Meeting notices.
  • Prepare agenda.
  • Prepare board members with materials.
  • Schedule meeting locations.
  • Serve as recording secretary for board meetings.
  • Carry out actions/direction from Board of Directors.

United Way - Agency Relations

  • Maintain copies of financial agency agreements.
  • Review agency financial information and maintain a working knowledge of agency financial position and needs.
  • Participate in agency events.
  • Remain alert to new grants available for not-for-profits and forward information to appropriate person(s).
  • Community awareness.
  • Community needs.
  • Maintain knowledge of services provided and available within covered counties and agency service areas for information and referral.

Campaign Administration

  • Evaluate the previous campaign for strengths and weaknesses.
  • Prepare a timeline of events for the campaign, special events, media etc.
  • Work with campaign Chair person recruiting Division Chairs.
  • Press Releases.
  • Coordinate in-house presentations.
  • Prepare volunteers for presentations.
  • Determine campaign supplies, select, distribute.
  • Solicitor training for volunteers.
  • Track ongoing results of campaign.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience working in the non-profit sector.
  • Interacting with volunteers.
  • Experience in leadership and management of organizations of comparable size and mission.
  • Understanding of issues relevant to the organization.
  • Ability to command confidence and respect of stakeholders.
  • Ability to build collaboration within the community
  • Experience in developing partnerships, building teams and conflict management
  • Experiencing in building revenue and philanthropic support
  • A desire to explore new ideas and develop innovative approaches to problem solving.
