In 2018, United Way Halifax invested over $3.5 million in our community – funding a network of community agencies and non-profit organizations. We also work closely with municipal, provincial, federal, non-profit and private sector organizations to build stronger and better-connected communities and pathways out of poverty. The organization is currently searching for a Controller to join United Way Halifax’s team. The ideal candidate will be joining a talented, hard-working, caring, and passionate team. Reporting to the President & CEO, primary responsibilities will include:
- Management and monitoring of financial practices, policies and procedures to maintain strong systems of internal control;
- Provide financial leadership to the President & CEO, Audit Committee and the leadership team at United Way;
- Management of tax compliance and reporting;
- Management of external audit process;
- Preparation of annual and project budgets, financial forecasting, and cash flow analysis;
- Monitoring annual expense and revenue budget;
- Manage and monitor all forms of donations, including processing, receipting, tracking, and reporting;
- Serve as a hands-on technical leader, manage a small team and, establish and implement departmental goals, processes and procedures;
- Work to implement and streamline reporting processes, ensure proper use and knowledge of accounting and database systems, and recommend and implement new processes, procedures, systems, etc.;
- Produce monthly financial reports for internal use including Board of Director reporting;
- Produce annual financial statements for audit purposes and report to the community;
- Manage revenue flow to and from other United Ways and oversee fee-for-service components;
- Oversee IT organization, systems, policies and practices. The ideal candidate is a well-rounded professional with a high degree of initiative, accountability, and excellent problem solving skills.
You combine excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills and consistently demonstrate the ability to adapt and manage conflicting priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
- Minimum of 5 years’ progressive experience in financial roles with increasing responsibilities;
- Experience in managing a team and providing sound leadership and guidance to staff;
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, and accounting and data management systems;
- Effective written and oral communication skills. Must be able to present executive quality financial analysis;
- Non-profit experience considered an asset.
