In consultation with the CEO, develops and implements the UWSM Community Impact agenda; participates in and supports investment process of Community Agenda. Provides leadership in development of UWSM community and educational initiatives. Works with UWSM staff, volunteers, committed donors, and community partners to uphold and further the UWSM mission. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Community Initiative Process

  • Assist Board of Directors, Community Impact Councils, Volunteers and CEO in envisioning, clarifying and pursuing UWSM’s development as a community impact organization. 
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend potential initiatives and community collaborations in which UWSM should be involved, especially as it relates to education.
  • Lead development of Board-approved UWSM initiatives and represent UWSM in other related community initiatives, as determined.
  • Assist in periodic assessment of community needs and assets in partnership with other public and private community partners. 
  • Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications  to develop the means to evaluate and clearly report back to the community the success of UWSM’s community impact efforts. 

Community Investment Process

  • Develop appropriate policies and procedures to ensure a sound Community Investment process.
  • Working with the CEO, recruit and train volunteer Community Investment Team leaders.
  • Assist in the development of grant RFPs and provide staff support to the volunteer grant committee.
  • Facilitate analysis of current funding patterns, gaps, and duplications with each Community Investment Team.

Community Involvement

  • Participating in civic organization(s), Chamber(s) of Commerce activities, Excel By 5, and significant community events, as assigned, to represent UWSM.

Organizational Participation

  • Work with the Resource Development Department to present United Way as South Mississippi’s key means to invest for community impact; support campaign division(s) as assigned. 
  • Gather and interpret community data as it relates to organizational areas of focus and grants; be prepared to present in a professional manner
  • Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications to develop and communicate UWSM community impact’s programs.
  • Work with the Director of the Volunteers and Special Projects to develop volunteer recruitment plans in support of UWSM’s priority goals and outcomes as it relates to educational impact programming.
  • Support other members of the staff in their aspects of UWSM’s work. 
  • Participate in UWSM Management Team’s meetings and discussions. 
  • Participate in organizational grant/funding teams as requested.

Education

  • Manage and operate UWSM’s PreK4Ward program to include but not limited to: preparing and managing budget, building and maintaining positive relationships with school districts, oversee hiring of teachers, teacher’s assistants and program directors, and act as an advocate for local PreK programs
  • Represents UWSM as the member of the Mississippi Campaign for Grade-Level Reading
  • Support and manage the Dolly Parton Imagination Library
  • Act as a liaison and local project manager for the Herron Project
Educational Background: 
Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Team leadership experience.
  • Solid practical knowledge of human services issues and programs, and not-for-profit organizations; minimum of five years of experience in non-profit human service agency or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Community building and organizing skills.
  • Project management experience. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain needed information systems. 
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Microsoft Excel and database experience.
  • Ability to work well with diverse constituency including volunteer committees and community partners. 
  • Mississippi Driver’s License and car.
