The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will work within the Volunteer Center at Heart of West Michigan United Way. This role supports community and corporate volunteerism by understanding techniques, technology, and tools that can be employed to help individuals and groups to make a positive difference.  Through the work of the position, you will manage and train on a web-based volunteer database, support corporate volunteers by working with companies and agencies, and coordinate annual volunteer events and collection drives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage key community collection drives for the Volunteer Center to assure they are executed in a timely manner, with attention to detail and customer service.
  • Connect in-kind donations to community needs through agency and school partnerships.
  • Manage the administration and application of the Volunteer Center website, including promoting the use of the tool in the community, providing technical support, and maintaining organizational lists and volunteer opportunities posted on the site.
  • Manage volunteer data and work with Data Center staff to ensure proper data handling processes are implemented.
  • Assist with corporate or group needs for active civic engagement by working with the Volunteer Center Manager to effectively connect companies and groups with nonprofit organizations and community issues.
  • Support Volunteer Center Manager in planning, execution, and evaluation of major volunteer events.
  • Support Volunteer Center Manager in promoting volunteerism in Kent County and recruiting and recognizing volunteers.
  • Create surveys & gather feedback from agency and volunteer participants in volunteer events and collection drives.
Educational Background: 
BA degree preferred or minimum of 2 years in project or volunteer management experience.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Focused experience on customer service and relationship building and demonstrated success with effective listening skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with an ability to relate with a diverse group of individuals or organizations in an effective manner.
  • Proficient in database management, web-based applications, and Microsoft Office computer applications.
  • Ability to quickly learn and implement new technology and/or communication tools.  (For example, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.)
  • High-energy individual who takes initiative with a positive outlook who can manage ambiguity and change.
  • High level of organization and prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engender the trust and confidence of volunteers.
  • Experience as a volunteer in a variety of roles—from direct service to leadership-- with various organizations preferred.
  • Ability to build and maintain mutually respectful relationships with a diverse population.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Fosters a racism-free environment.
  • Proven practice in successfully implementing all five Heart of West Michigan United Way Core Values.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
  • Moderate level of stress caused from tight deadlines.
  • Moderate level of mental and/or visual fatigue and/or eyestrain may result from looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Work outside of normal business hours will be required from time to time.
  • Moderate office noise level.
