Supports and helps to advance United Way of Broward County’s (UWBC) mission of fighting for the health, education and financial stability of every person in Broward County. Oversees and manages all aspects of UWBC’s resource development strategies and initiatives, and all marketing and communication strategies and programs. This includes maintaining and enhancing current successful initiatives and creating new resource streams and initiatives, such as the annual workplace campaign, affinity group programs, planned giving, endowment, major gifts, in-kind gifts, and capital campaigns. This also includes overseeing the planning and execution of effective public relations and strategic communications initiatives and projects that build the United Way brand, strengthening relationships with key constituencies. This position leads and directs all Resource Development (RD) staff to maintain superior donor relationships and meet measurable revenue goals.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Organizational Leadership:

  • Participate as a member of the Senior Management Team to provide a united, visible, and strong leadership presence across the organization to help instill new thinking, focus and prioritize efforts, and operationalize the organization’s Strategic Plan.
  • Assists the CEO and Senior Management Team in promoting the long-range plans and goals of the organization to the community.
  • Provides assistance to the CEO in staffing special committees and in the administration of functions that enable the organization to meet its commitments to the community.
  • Works closely with, and fully supports the Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) committee to understand the strategic priorities that align with the agency goals.

Strategy and Organizational Structure:

  • Responsible for managing and leading all RD lines of business including: Corporate Relations, Major and Planned Gifts, New Business/New Partnerships, Donor Relations and RD Operations including Corporate Events.
  • Leads Resource Development Team in the creation of all resource development strategy aligned to the organizational strategy with defined operating plans for each year.
  • Analyzes the progress of annual operating plan goals and metrics and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Works with the CEO and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in developing the Resource Development budget and assumes responsibility for its administration.
  • Reviews and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of resource development initiatives, researches, tests, and implements new techniques and materials to improve the effectiveness of these initiatives.
  • Assists the CEO in establishing and developing appropriate operating policies and procedures affecting resource development initiatives.
  • Works with the CEO to develop goals and objectives for United Way’s resource development initiatives and develops and directs the implementation of long- and short-range plans to meet those goals and objectives.
  • Maintains knowledge of current and evolving resource development trends, as well as economic, political, technical, and general business trends that may impact UWBC’s resource development results.
  • Manages multiple projects and tasks – Effectively manages time and resources to respond to emerging needs while continuing to deliver on organizational goals, objectives and timelines, and seeks help when needed in juggling priorities.
  • Ability to lead strategic development efforts for an organization that generates $14 million or more in fundraising revenue annually. Progressive thinking, with understanding of philanthropic trends and best practices in donor-centered fund-raising.
  • Ability to recognize organizational-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment.

Fundraising for Impact:

  • In partnership with the Vice President of Workplace Campaigns, plans, organizes, and implements the annual workplace fundraising campaign for the United Way within the guidelines established by the board of directors and the CEO.
  • Works with the Director Major Gifts, Director Corporate Philanthropy, Director Women United and Director Planned Giving; ensures that we create and implement a plan to cultivate, steward, and solicit our current and prospect donors. Ensures that financial issues for gifts are handled with complete disclosure.
  • Builds and supports a discipline of relationship management within the Resource Development Department and within areas providing critical support to the Resource Development area.
  • Cultivates and sustains positive, productive relationships with volunteers, community and business leaders, donors, fund recipients, and staff.
  • Educates staff, volunteers, and members of the business and financial community about United Way’s resource development initiatives.
  • Evaluates resource development results; recommends changes, organizes and develops an appropriate volunteer structure through which the community-wide support for the fundraising appeal is achieved; provides support and assistance to the volunteer leadership and Resource Development staff.
  • Works with the CEO and Chief Program Officer (CPO) to plan, organize, and implement new revenue streams to support community impact work. This includes but is not limited to online giving campaigns, endowment campaigns, fundraising events and the addition of affinity group programs.

Marketing and Communications:

  • Works with the CEO and VP Marketing and Communications in developing and directing the implementation of long- and short-range plans for the purpose of meeting the organization’s marketing and communication goals.
  • Works with the VP Marketing and Communications to develop an annual Marketing and Communications strategic/tactical plan, including public relations and online marketing. This includes the design, shape, and execution of a comprehensive, multi-faceted donor and stakeholder plan that supports the organization’s strategies and objectives, builds relationships with key audiences, and works to position United Way as the leader in community impact.
  • Works with the VP Marketing and Communications to help United Way to become a true story telling organization, training all key stakeholders on our brand guidelines and key messaging.

Staff Leadership:

  • Selects, guides, motivates, and participates in the training, professional development, and evaluation of direct reports.
  • Understands and motivates individuals and organizations in a positive collaborative manner.
  • Provides goal-setting, visioning, leadership, and strategic direction for Resource Development staff.
  • Directs and manages Resource Development staff activities. Ensures that team members are invested in team activities and decisions and that the team works together to achieve organizational goals.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely completion and/or approval of organizational documents, including but not limited to performance reviews, professional development plans, goals and objectives, timekeeping, expense and travel reimbursements, credit card reports, requisitions, and ongoing documentation of performance accomplishments and areas requiring improvement.

Volunteer Leadership:

  • Works with Director Corporate Philanthropy to provide goal-setting, visioning, leadership, and strategic direction for Resource Development volunteers
  • Works with the Director Corporate Philanthropy and other Major Gift staff in the identification and recruitment of Major and Planned Gifts volunteers.
  • Ensures a system of continuity of volunteer leadership.

  • Ability to ensure that all informational data is current, appropriate to goals and outcomes, and supports all organizational needs.
  • Ability to generate excitement and energy around the organization’s mission and activities, encouraging others to provide financial support
  • A comprehension and appreciation of metrics and performance indicators used to measure progress in resource development. An expertise in evaluating and realigning structure and process systems support. Ability to analyze and interpret internal and external data.
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization's crisis plan and response efforts.
  • Network Oriented - Fosters trust and interdependence and collaboration. Links local, regional, national, and global perspectives.  Leverages the power of networks.

Supervision and Working Relationships Supervisory Direction Received: Works in support of and at the direction of the President/CEO.  Supervises:  Vice President Workplace Campaigns, VP Marketing and Communications, Director Major Gifts, Director Women United, Director Corporate Philanthropy, Director Planned Giving, Director RD Operations and Manager Events Planning.

Educational Background: 
Master’s Degree in human services or business administration preferred; Bachelor’s required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Preferred experience: Minimum of 10 years related work experience in the human services field with leadership experience in fundraising, resource development, program development, administration, and fiscal oversight.
  • Volunteer management:  Proven track record in developing a strong, cohesive, creative, high performing team.
  • Successful public speaking and training/facilitation experience preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Proficiency with using the internet for research purposes.
  • Customer Relationship Management software preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License, automobile insurance, and reliable transportation required.

Environment & Physical Demands: 

  • The environment is climate controlled (i.e., heated and air-conditioned). 
  • Lighting is adequate through overhead lighting as well as windows and blinds.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Physical demands include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting approximately 25 pounds, regular use of the telephone, copier, fax and computer. 
  • Demands also involve protracted concentration.
