The Director of Marketing is a creative and strategic leader who will utilize relationships, partnerships and a variety of communication mediums to position United Way of Larimer County (UWLC) as a leader in the community. The Director will effectively communicate UWLC’s mission and ensure all communication to donors, volunteers and community members is professional, effective and impactful. The Director serves on the Leadership Team and the Board of Directors Marketing Committee. The Director will increase brand awareness for United Way through strategic advertising and media relations and will support all departments and events with marketing plans, communication and advertising. The position is responsible for writing, media relations, brand standards, UWLC reports and quality certifications, the annual report, website and collateral design, editing, supporting Executive staff with speeches, staff and board messaging, and revenue generating campaigns.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Marketing & Communications

  • Coordinate all advertising and public relations across the organization with an emphasis on in-kind advertising and no or low-cost marketing opportunities that increase United Way’s exposure and standing within the community.
  • Work with the Resource Development team to develop business plans and materials for corporate sponsorship packages, Business Cares packages and more.
  • Create, organize and disseminate online and print materials for United Way.
  • Develop marketing and advertising for State of Community and other key organization events.
  • Implement protocols and quality control measures to ensure the quality and accuracy of communication is consistently excellent.
  • Oversee and provide content for internal communication.
  • Develop messaging and implement plan to update all communication platforms and audiences accordingly.
  • Ensure that website language and architecture creates best possible user experience.
  • Work with staff and board on refinements to mission statement, vision and messaging.
  • Write speeches, talking points, articles and marketing pieces for online and print sources.
  • Edit /approve print and online marketing, media and donor communication.
  • Oversee media relations and write pieces for publication to highlight the work of United Way.
  • Develop presentations and materials all staff to use with constituents.
  • Work collaboratively with expert consultants on crisis communication as necessary.
  • Increase online stakeholder engagement.
  • In coordination with the Vice President of Community Impact & Engagement and other staff, develop organization and departmental marketing and communications strategies to advance the goals and objectives of United Way.
  • Create an annual report.
  • Improve Board of Directors materials to increase engagement.
  • Write compelling pieces for use in grants, newsletters, donor appeals and other constituent messaging.
  • Support the Be Ready campaign through content and website updates, meeting attendance, and event promotion.

Community Engagement:

  • Implement effective communications and community engagement strategies to make volunteer events/initiatives revenue positive.
  • Increase utilization of interns and volunteers to reduce marketing and personnel costs.

Budgeting, Efficiency and Metrics:

  • Pursue opportunities to reduce marketing costs.
  • Coordinate all marketing /communications /promotional purchases across the organization, with an emphasis on in-kind donations.
  • Manage budget for all advertising, promotional items, communications/marketing materials, event marketing costs and other marketing/communications costs.
  • Implement procedures to streamline and coordinate all marketing/communications efforts across the organization.
  • Develop strategy and goals for marketing/communications activities with measureable outcomes.

Staff Supervision:

  • Manages staff, volunteers and interns.
  • Conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Assists in creating and implementing department-wide strategy, goals and budgets.

Other Duties:

  • Maintain excellent communication with all staff.
  • Attend and participate in Community Impact & Engagement Department and other staff meetings.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five or more years of professional experience that includes marketing, development, community relations and/or nonprofit administration.
  • Track record of successful sponsorship solicitation or other revenue generation within a nonprofit setting.
  • Andar or other CRM experience.
  • Proven ability to grow and retain donors, volunteers and sponsors.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and PowerPoint.
  • Strong graphic design skills, including ability to create and edit pieces in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Website design/HTML experience.
  • Ability to update content and images online.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks concurrently and completely, with responsible follow-through.
  • Able to initiate and complete tasks and programs independently.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Hardworking, proactive, and solution-focused.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Proposed Annual Salary Range: $52,000 – $56,000
