Reporting to the Senior Director of Planned Giving and working closely with agency staff, the Director, Planned Giving will be responsible for increasing planned gift solicitations and growing Save the Children’s planned giving society, The Eglantyne Jebb Society. This position draws upon the high level of charitable gift planning expertise to motivate prospective donors and lead cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned giving donors.
Areas of Responsibility:
Build relationships with planned giving prospects (60%)
- Identify, cultivate (letters, phone calls and face-to-face visits), and solicit planned giving prospects to secure legacy commitments.
- Build and maintain a significant base of planned giving support.
- Extensive local, regional, and national travel- 50%
- Plan and execute donor events. Make ongoing assessments of their impact; recalibrate accordingly.
Planned Giving Knowledge and Expertise (30%)
- Serve as a liaison with external and internal legal offices and financial institutions relating to planned giving, as well as serve technical specialist to assist planned giving and major gift staff in planned gifts.
- Organize and help conduct presentations for prospective donors, professional financial and estate planners, and other constituencies.
- Cultivate relationships with lawyers, accountants, trust officers, life underwriters, financial planners and other professionals to make them aware of, and keep them up to date on, the services and programs at the agency and opportunities for funding by their clients.
- Become informed and inform the agency staff about the tax aspects of charitable gifts and keep informed about new legislation and revenue rulings affecting such gifts.
Other duties (10%)
- Provide regular progress reports to the Senior Director of Planned Giving.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
Skills/Experience:
- Minimum 7-10 years' related front-line fundraising experience.
- Familiarity with tax aspects of charitable gifts and legislation affecting such gifts
- Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organization and manage donor relationships.
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts including staff, volunteers, donors and Board members.
- Ability to work effectively in a team, a team player with sound judgment and the ability to handle matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
- Hands-on experience with data entry. Experience working with a donor database management system is an asset.
- Strong administrative, organizational and time management skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally and work flexible hours when required.
- Exceptional listener with ability to understand the needs and motivations of others, find common ground and synthesize information into compelling narratives
