The United Way of the Capital Region is seeking a Self-Starter to help us grow relationships with Major Gift Donors.

The Ideal Candidate will: support the planning, coordination and implementation of the individual leadership gifts ($1,000+) and the individual major gifts ($10,000+) programs to meet the United Way of The Capital Region’s major gifts fundraising goal and build the individual donor base.  This position is responsible for the direct solicitation of gifts as well as for the coordination of other staff and volunteers in additional cultivation and solicitation of donors.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Leadership Gifts program

  • Development of the annual goals and work plan for the Capital Club (Leadership Donors).
  • Develop and implement the annual goal and work plan for Non-Workplace Capital Club (Leadership Donors).
  • Develop and implement leadership giving initiatives that align with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Track and report on progress of the leadership giving program throughout the year.
  • Work in collaboration with campaign managers to develop, grow and manage the number of Corporate Leadership programs.
  • Develop and manage the cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and recognition efforts for Leadership Giving.
  • Conduct prospect research of current Leadership donors for identification with the intent of creating a pipeline of potential Major Gift donors of $10,000+.
  • Improve segmentation of current and potential donor lists and employ techniques to maximize increased giving by giving level.

Major Gifts program

  • Develop the annual goals and work plan for assigned donors in the Tocqueville Society based on the strategic direction of the United Way.
  • Assist in the development of goals and strategies for the Resource Development department.
  • Manage effective system for tracking and cultivating donors and prospects, providing progress reports throughout the year.
  • Develop and maintain highly customized donor engagement plans and donor files.
  • Identify, research and qualify prospective donors.
  • Develop portfolios of prospects for cultivation and solicitation by the President, Board and other volunteer solicitors and provide on-going support, appropriate accountability, and strategic counsel to each, in order to support their successful cultivation and solicitation.
  • Provide support for the Tocqueville Council as needed and attend Tocqueville related events.
  • Provide cross functional support of staff on major donor and volunteer engagement. activities, corporate leadership efforts and development and oversight of collateral materials and communications.

Solicit Gifts on behalf of the United Way of the Capital Region

  • Manage a personal caseload of Capital Club donors, Major donors and new prospects.
  • Manage Non-Workplace solicitation efforts.
  • Manage Results-Only accounts.
  • Move potential donors through solicitation and closure.

Manage relationships with donors and prospects

  • Work cross functionally with Marketing/Communications to produce materials and tools to communicate regularly with donors and supporters.
  • Identify opportunities to network with donors and prospects and engage members of the staff, Board and Volunteers as appropriate.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for donor recognition, stewardship and appreciation.
  • Ensure all gifts from Capital Club donors and assigned donors in the Major gifts program receive follow-up communications and recognition.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Three to five years’ experience in non-profit fundraising or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication, public speaking, group training/facilitation, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and gain the respect of a broad constituency base, including executive levels in business, industry and government, foundation management, service providers and other key community leaders.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Compensation/Benefits: 

This is a Full-Time, Exempt position with an annual starting salary of $40K- $42K and a generous employee benefit and retirement package.
