The Community Impact Director is responsible for leading the strategic investment of United Way of El Paso County’s (UWEPC) financial and non-financial resources to create the greatest possible impact in helping improve outcomes for individuals and families while achieving community-level change in the areas of Education, Access to Health, Basic Needs, and Financial Stability.
The Community Impact Director leads the Community Impact Department and leads the organization as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically about the unique role, approaches and contributions of United Way of El Paso County.
- Ability to develop and implement United Way’s overall business/organizational strategy, integrating the functional areas into highly effective community impact response to critical community needs.
- Have extensive experience in leading high-performing teams (volunteers and staff) in the design and delivery of results-based, high-profile, large-scale initiatives, programs and advocacy/public policy efforts.
Major Areas of Responsibilities:
Community Impact Agenda
- Develop community-wide goals and implement a strategic and cohesive plan for impact to make progress on these goals, all based on an understanding of community needs, an awareness of community resources, a knowledge of local and national best practice strategies (financial, advocacy, volunteer, other).
- Leverage and align UWEPC’s unique strengths and abilities to support the strategies by engaging in relationships and partnerships, and measuring results.
- Assess community information assets and needs, and direct initiatives to address development and dissemination of information related to health and human services.
- Identify and recruit a diverse and dynamic group of business, academic and community change leaders to support UWEPC’s Community Impact Agenda.
- Collect and track key data points related to United Way’s areas of strategic focus.
- Timely entry of information into data management system(s).
Community Impact Fund
- Develop and direct systems and structures for the investment of the (UWEPC) Community Impact Fund.
- Provide oversight of the volunteers in the community investment decision-making process, monitor funded agencies through on-site visits and evaluation of reports, and communicate results to United Way staff and volunteers, as well as the agencies.
- Provide leadership and oversight of a feedback loop, including performance indicators and management tools to track progress towards established goals.
- Serve as liaison with funded agencies, supporting their efforts through ongoing dialogue and technical assistance, consulting on outcomes, collaborating on action plans to address problems, and developing and conducting trainings.
Community Impact Strategies and “Products”
- Provides oversight and direction in the design and implementation of integrated strategies that deliver results on United Way’s Community Impact Agenda.
- In collaboration with noted academic and field experts, the Director teams with staff to ensure the construction of interlocking, effective models of change that compel donors and the community to invest and engage in generating visible, measurable improvement in community conditions and individual well-being.
- Community and Donor Relations/Relationship Management
- Actively cultivate and maintain relationships and develop strategic partnerships with community, public sector, foundation and corporate leaders to maximize United Way’s leadership positioning in community impact efforts.
- Develop and drive effective networks of leadership level volunteers, high-net-worth donors, foundation and corporate leadership to generate resources and achieve impact.
- Attend key community events and activities as a way to promote United Way of El Paso County’s mission, vision and core values to become a defined community ambassador for United Way.
Resource Development/Proposal Writing
- Develop relationships with local and national foundation and corporate leadership that result in unique opportunities that advance community impact work in collaboration with other funders and community partners:
- identify grant opportunities to support initiative(s);
- assist in grant writing activities such as researching strategies and developing program logic models, budgets and any other input that would benefit the application process.
- Directly manage a portfolio of workplace giving accounts:
- Work with other staff to create strategies to prospect, cultivate, solicit and grow overall giving, including leadership level giving;
- Evaluate and monitor each campaign's progress. Identify potential problems and report to staff and volunteer leadership;
- Develop partnerships between accounts and United Way that result in increased participation in United Way-led volunteer events, sponsorships, gifts-in-kind, special events and corporate engagement.
Funding/Grants Management
- Ensure that quality control policies and procedures are in place and consistently practiced in grant management activities.
- Oversee the development and management of the budget and facilitate integrated fiscal accountability procedures between the CI Department and the Finance Department.
Community Engagement
- Provide leadership, strategy, planning, coordination and oversight of UWEPC’s community engagement efforts to include:
- volunteerelpaso.org;
- RISE; and
- Young Leaders Society.
Public Policy & Advocacy
- Provide leadership, strategy, planning, coordination and implementation of public policy agenda/initiatives, including stakeholder, i.e., Board of Directors, Community Impact Committees, funded agencies, etc., participation.
Other Duties / Responsibilities
- Coordinate with the Resource Development staff on priority funding areas and requests to donors to support program areas.
- Coordinate with the Marketing and Communications department on programmatic materials and data being distributed in the community.
- Minimum of 7-10 years progressive work experience with three (3) years of successful executive/senior management level experience managing a multi-million dollar operation; experience with volunteer boards, management committees and other volunteer groups which make operating policies for the organization; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of this position.
- Previous working experience in a diverse cross-sector and multi-disciplinary team environment preferred.
- Successful candidate must also embody personal attributes of honesty, integrity, professional behavior, tact, sense of urgency, and sense of humor.
Salary: $61,000 to $70,000 per year
