The President and Chief Executive Officer of the United Way for Southeastern Michigan serves in a highly visible and significant leadership position in a community that takes its civic responsibility very seriously. He/she provides strong, innovative and collaborative leadership focused on maximizing the role of the UWSEM in advancing the common good through community impact. The CEO is responsible for leading the UWSEM’s organizational strategies that will continue to build its financial and reputational foundation for the benefit of its diverse constituencies. In addition, he/she will be expected to build support for the UWSEM's role in the community in a way that significantly increases its reach and impact.   

A key responsibility for the next CEO is to act as a public spokesperson for the needs of the community and participate on the local and national level in education, health, and human services activities that affect the community. With the goal of making Greater Detroit a top place to live and work, a key priority for the UWSEM, the next CEO has tremendous opportunity to drive significant impact on the region and be part of the exciting revitalization of the city. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • As the CEO of one of Southeastern Michigan’s most visible and highly respected community service organizations, the CEO will have primary accountability for addressing issues using community economic development strategies and establishing alliances and relationships that will be optimally leveraged to maximize community impact. As the strategic and operational steward for the organization, he/she will be focused on building financial and social capital, civic will, and the ability to influence public policy. 
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience leading a complex organization in the nonprofit, corporate, or governmental sector where there are multiple and diverse constituencies.
  • Revenue generation experience that has included driving growth through corporate, foundation and individual giving with direct experience for soliciting major gifts and donations.
  • Experience working with a mission-driven “people business” service organization, either directly through a role as its leader or as an engaged board member.
  • Demonstrated passion for serving as an organizational representative who is comfortable, charismatic and positive on stage with the ability to energize and enthuse an audience.
  • Proven expertise in building and delivering operational excellence, including knowledge of best practices to enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Experience navigating changing landscapes where disruption has forced the organization to assess and adjust strategy and tactics to address changing demands.
  • Fiscal accountability for significant budgets and operating plans.
  • Management experience; an ability to lead, delegate, and develop a team of strong performers.
  • Experience reporting to and/or working closely with a volunteer board with a strong understanding and appreciation for the role of the board.
  • Experience leveraging the efforts of volunteers on behalf of a mission.
