United Way of Central Iowa (UWCI) is seeking at 55+RSVP Director to support and advance United Way’s mission of improving lives by managing the continuous development and implementation of 55+ Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) activities and recruitment strategies. This position helps to improve lives by ensuring that volunteer time and talent is aligned with producing positive results and measurable outcomes in the Community Impact areas of education, income and health.
The 55+RSVP initiative is a federal grant program through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). RSVP volunteers are age 55 and over who use their skills and talents learned over the years or develop new ones while serving in a variety of volunteer activities within the community. At UWCI, this program and position is part of our Volunteer Engagement team and reports to the Volunteer Engagement Officer. The Director works cross-functionally and with community partners to achieve the program’s and organizational goals.
In addition to the requirements for the position, the ideal candidate will have proven experience in identifying and developing successful volunteer recruitment strategies, strong relationship building skills and creating opportunities that further deepen and engage a volunteer’s experience with the organization and community, The desire to stay abreast of trends and preferences for the 55+ generation and volunteering is necessary to be successful in this role. Federal grant management experience a plus.
- Manages the day to day operations of the 55+RSVP initiative including the program budget, evaluations and compliance requirements. Annually, compiles and prepares the data for the annual program grant renewal with the Federal government.
- Identifies and creates senior volunteer recruitment strategies that are aligned with United Way of Central Iowa Community Impact focus areas.
- Creates and maintains collaborative partnerships necessary to identify/create/promote a continuum of senior volunteer engagement in the Community Impact focus areas. Key external partners include targeted local non-profit agencies. Key internal partners include the Volunteer Engagement staff, Community Impact staff, and Donor Engagement staff.
- Develops the capacity of targeted non-profit organizations to manage 55+RSVP volunteers that is in alignment with program guidelines and expectations. Provides training, consultation and technical assistance in volunteer engagement for the organizations.
- Represents 55+RSVP & United Way through community networking and participating in activities that connect senior recruitment strategies to established Community Impact focus areas.
- Works with the Volunteer Engagement Specialist to ensure the best possible use of time and talent. In conjunction with the Volunteer Engagement Officer, properly manages the specialist’s shared support time with 55+RSVP other Volunteer Engagement initiatives.
- Designs and implements both individual and group recognition strategies for the RSVP volunteers. This includes hosting group events and creating a periodic newsletter.
- Keeps abreast of issues and trends in senior volunteering by networking with local, state and national sector knowledge.
- Fosters organizational teamwork by participating in special projects and organizational activities.
- Ensures federal grant compliance and works closely with the finance team for renewal of the grant’s application every three years.

- Three to five years’ experience in the field of volunteer management as a supervisor or program director, including the recruitment of volunteers.
- Familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office products and database programs.
- Ability to empathize with and manage senior volunteers, including low income volunteers.
- Basic knowledge of community agencies and nonprofit groups.
- Driver’s license and ability to drive own vehicle for occasional local travel between buildings in the Central Iowa area. Overnight and air travel may occur once a year for 2-3 days.

Salary: $41,000 to $50,000 per year
