We have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Advisor, Charitable Estate Planning in our Mission Advancement Department located in Denver, Colorado

Under the supervision of the National Executive Lead, this senior-level position will collaboratively focus on the communication and cultivation of professional estate and wealth advisors as well as working with individuals when complex gifting arrangements are desired within a defined geographic territory. The Senior Advisor will contribute to and actively implement the national advisor program plan through their work with estate planning attorneys, financial planners and other planning professionals involved in advising potential and active donors to the association. In addition, the Senior Advisor will travel to implement cultivation and stewardship strategies locally and collaborate with Charitable Estate Planning Advisors that will increase advisors’ awareness of the American Heart Association and its individual affiliates and lead to a greater understanding of the organization and its mission.

This position will be the cornerstone of a groundbreaking new program that will allow the Charitable Estate Planning division of the Mission Advancement department to redefine our critical relationships with the professional advisor community and promote and grow the association’s newly established donor-advised fund program.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops a territory-specific plan that leverages the national advisor program plan for identifying and qualifying the most promising profesional advisor relationships within a defined geographic territory (WY, CO, NM, OK, TX, AR) in order to make the best use of time and resources. Upon qualifying, telephones and obtains appointment with the most promising professionals. Provides consultation and information regarding estate and tax planning, estate administration, charitable giving and the AHA donor advised fund as necessary.
  • Creates a dynamic cultivation plan for nurturing the most promising professional advisor relationships in order to successfully influence and solicit new charitable estate gifts from advisor clients.
  • Works with affiliate and national staff to coordinate charitable estate planning program activities with other organizational efforts and approaches to identify priority prospects and professional advisor partners. Keeps appropriate staff and volunteers updated on activities and progress as necessary.
  • Contributes to the develop and implementation of the national advisor program plan focused on the “best practices” for the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of professional estate planning and wealth advisors. Plan to include various communication mediums, which may include but is not limited to special events, direct mail, newsletters (printed and electronic), telemarketing, websites, paid advertising, focus groups, emails, social media messages, etc. with the purpose of generating quality interaction with professionals and their clients.
  • Pursues, cultivates and builds a network of business relationships and alliances with internal departments and external organizations and vendors to develop integration opportunities and deepen the engagement of professional estate planning and wealth advisors.
  • Serve as a conduit for the promotion of the AHA Donor Advised Fund Program which could include but is not limited to producing communications, presenting to professional advisors and individual solicitation.
  • Provides consultation as needed for technical solicitations and creation of formal proposals involving estate planning advisors and other projects as requested.
Educational Background: 
Advanced degree (Masters or higher), JD, CFP, CFA highly preferred

  • At least 5 years of experience in Charitable Estate Planning, 10 years of experience preferred
  • Demonstrated strategic, leadership and management capabilities in a comprehensive development environment; high level of motivation and assertiveness
  • Ability to successfully establish and maintain working relationships with senior staff
  • Successful proven record of completing gift agreements through personal interviews
  • Excellent public speaking and one-on-one communication skills
  • Proven success in dealing with professional estate planning and wealth advisors
  • Demonstrated skills in relationship building and stewardship, conducting effective sales/solicitation calls and/or effectively closing/sales solicitations
  • Ability to travel approximately 50% of time working to develop programs in major metropolitan areas within designated territory or as assigned. Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to manage budget for marketing and traveling expenses
