Senior Development Director, Heart Walk (Fundraising, Sales)

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Senior H eart Walk Director (Sales/Fundraising) in Columbus, OH. The Senior Heart Walk Director is responsible for the future of AHA’s Healthy For Good Heart Walk campaign focused on embedding AHA deep into our communities for local health impact. Under direction of the Columbus Development Vice President, the Senior Heart Walk Director leads a team of three Heart Walk (Fundraising) Directors and an Administrative Associate. This player/coach is responsible for cultivating and securing corporate sponsorships and managing corporate accounts, executive and community leadership volunteers and community teams to meet and exceed the overall team fundraising goal in excess of $2.5M. The Senior Heart Walk Director also collaborates with internal health focused staff and external corporate and community leaders to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of fundraising and mission efforts. In addition, will be responsible for recruiting and partnering with volunteer leaders to engage them in the mission of the American Heart Association.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Builds a strong volunteer foundation of top employer CEOs, civic and community leaders as Healthy For Good Heart Walk executive level volunteers and donors
  • Builds relationships with local corporations, with a strong focus on top employers in the market, to secure and grow employees and business contacts as sponsors and participants engaged in our health initiatives
  • Leads a team of staff and volunteers to leverage and manage relationships to successfully achieve event sponsorship and participant income to achieve and exceed Heart Walk financial goals, including monthly and fiscal goals
  • Aligns to AHA fundraising best practice guidelines, which includes daily calls and meetings in the assigned market, developing mutually satisfying relationships with corporations and top-level donors, utilizing a consultative approach to match corporate and donor interests with the AHA mission and priorities
  • Drives Heart Walk participant income by recruiting and leading team captains, participants and executive level volunteers, providing effective orientation, training, development, activation and customer service
  • Drives sponsorship income through securing, renewing and upgrading sponsors.
  • Leads a team in implementing large scale Heart Walk events based on nationally established best practices
  • Drives organizational change through employers to build a culture of health by adopting AHA workplace health initiatives
  • Attends and participates in frequent internal meetings focused on strategies to meet fundraising and mission goal
  • Achieve Best Practices in volunteer recruitment: i.e., committee structure in place 18 months prior to event and securing three year commitment of Event Chairs
  • Day to day management of the fundraising team, including onboarding, training, professional development, performance management and coaching
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years' work experience in fundraising or outside sales experience, preferably with a voluntary health agency.
  • Minimum one (1) year of management experience or in a progressively responsible position within fundraising and/or outside sales.
  • Ability to manage timelines and details to help staff be successful, and keep senior management informed of progress and areas for additional attention
  • Proven track record in meeting sales/fundraising goals
  • Direct knowledge of special event fundraising tactics essential
  • Demonstrated ability to secure corporate donations through participating in and leading top level sponsorship asks
  • Ability to manage operating budget
  • Collaborative approach to working with other internal partners
  • Candidates must be results driven with the ability to multi task, and must also be willing and able to travel frequently within the area
  • Organization, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills are a must
  • Proven track record of training staff to success
  • Ability to develop and execute effective fundraising plans for events
  • Strategic agility and adaptability
  • Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets
