Director of Major Gifts and Foundation Relations

Reporting to the Vice President of Resource Development, the Director of Major Gifts and Foundation Relations (Director) will lead the major gift program for United Way of the Midlands.  Working closely with the SVP, Community Impact and the VP of Resource Development, the Director will focus on growing and stewarding revenue-producing relationships at United Way through individual as well as corporate/foundation gifts.

Foundation Responsibilities:

  • The Director is responsible for creating and implementing strategies and building relationships that maintain and expand revenue within a portfolio of Corporate and Private Foundation Grants. In partnership with the Community Impact Team, Finance Team, and Resource Development (RD) Team, the Director will establish and grow meaningful relationships with foundation influencers/stakeholders to acquire new grants, especially from regional and national funders, while retaining UWM’s current grants.

Tocqueville and Major Gift Responsibilities:

  • The Director is responsible for planning and executing strategies to drive year-over-year net increases in Tocqueville Society revenue (dollars) and membership (donors) and reducing churn. Recommitting the current donor base is critical to success. The Director will be proactive in developing personal relationships in his/her assigned portfolio of current Tocqueville Society donors as well as with prospects, and strengthening donors’ and prospects’ connectivity with UWM. The Director will increase the number of Tocqueville Society ($10K to $25K) and Major gifts ($25K Plus) by executing individualized plans to identify, cultivate, solicit and secure gifts working independently and in conjunction with RD Team, ECDs, and Tocqueville Society Committee.
Areas of Responsibility: 

Foundation Relations

  • Create and drive an annual operating plan and five-year grants strategy to expand our relationships with decision-makers and increase revenue through foundations. Manage the action steps and results from these efforts.
  • Track revenue generation throughout the year and provide monthly projections against goal, with a strong emphasis on understanding and accuracy of revenue projections.
  • As part of five-year grants strategy, specifically focus on increasing national and regional foundation relationships and grant acquisition, intentionally expanding this part of our grants portfolio.
  • Track grant revenue generation, retention, visits, and key activity throughout the year, provide regular activity status, update projections to target, and conduct the appropriate stakeholder analysis to build and refine goals.
  • Work effectively with other functions at United Way including CI, RD, finance, and communications staff to provide appropriate support and value to foundation stakeholders and community partners.
  • Foster creative thinking and facilitate future partnerships with existing and new foundation partners.
  • Work with the President/CEO, Sr. VP of Community Impact, VP of Resource Development, and UW Board to manage strategic foundation stakeholder engagement on an on-going basis.
  • Achieve annual revenue goals for foundation grants, including specific metrics to be included in annual performance objectives

Tocqueville Society

  • Create, prioritize, execute and achieve the growth plan for Tocqueville Society membership and giving at a net growth rate number (donors) and percentage (dollars) consistent with the plan.
  • Maintain an active, identified pipeline of 10 Tocqueville prospects with capacity to make a major gift. Devise and execute appropriate individualized strategies to bring prospects to solicitation and closure.
  • Manage a Tocqueville Society Committee and any specialized projects designed to assist with engagement and retention, membership growth or increased funding to products developed together with Sr. VP Community Impact and VP of Resource Development.
  • Make decision on cultivation time vs. expected gift response, determine who needs to be involved in the relationship (be it an executive, volunteer or staff member) with the donor, and decide the most effective and productive use of time.
  • Collaborate with campaign teams, volunteers, board members and other UWM staff in creating and implementing strategies for cultivation, solicitation and closure.
  • Enhance stewardship and building long-term relationships with individual Tocqueville Society members leading to investment in and engagement with UWM’s work. Conduct personal visits to sustain and enhance one-on-one relationships with donors. Meet goal targets for donor visits.

Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of four years of fundraising experience, with demonstrated success securing foundation grants and closing major gift commitments.
  • Effective skills and ability to tell the UW story in a compelling and inspirational way

  • Excellent understanding of corporate and foundation grants process.
  • Understanding corporate sponsorships.
  • Basic understanding of planned giving.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Midlands philanthropic community desired.
  • Experience working with high-level decision makers, trustees, and other volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational, project management and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take full ownership of assignments.
  • Excellent collaborator and team member, able to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize prospect tracking systems and donor databases.
  • Ability to set expectations, establish priorities and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced development department.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Outlook required (currently used organizationally)
  • Proficient computer skills (familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems and electronic giving preferred)
  • Must have valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle 

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is primarily performed indoors, within an open office setting with a moderate noise level.
  • Frequently required to sit/stand at computer in a stationery position.
  • Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as copy machine, printer, phone, and fax machine.
  • Frequently required to move about inside the office for meetings, access to information, office equipment, etc. 
  • Frequently required to travel locally for meetings that occur in other office settings.
  • May be required to travel nationally for meetings, trainings, and conferences in other office settings on multiple occasions during the year.
