The LPN is responsible for a variety of medical support services for all surgical clients and provides nursing care to the patient during both the procedure and the recovery period. Help ensure that surgical patients care from admit to release is consistent with PPSWO protocols and operating procedures.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Each clinic day, set-up the recovery room, restock supplies, perform narcotic count and prepare medications.
- Prior to elective abortion, provide supportive education, review pregnancy options, assure informed consent, review contraceptive choices, help determine plan for birth control with patients, review medical history, and determine any contraindications or need for special medical consideration prior to abortion.
- Provide patient follow-up during the course of the clinic day, including taking “nurse” calls and scheduling post-abortion check-ups, providing ectopic precautions, making referrals, consulting with physician for orders and plans of care.
- Thoroughly document all patient follow-up in patient charts, appropriate logs and complete Incident Reports when necessary.
- Collaborate with Health Center Manager and other members of the nursing team to develop daily plan for patient care.
- Admit, assess and release patients in Recovery Room, ruling out any complications and consult with physicians as needed.
- Educate patients on their chosen methods of contraception.
- Administer or call in to pharmacy patient medications as ordered by the physician or according to standing orders, and document.
- Perform Surgical Assistant duties as needed, including medical emergencies, lab testing, preparation of instruments, assisting physician and supporting patients during exams and procedures.
- Maintain active Ohio LPN license and operate within “Standards of Safe Nursing Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses” as specified by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
- Fully participate in all health center efforts related to patient care, customer services, productivity and clinic flow.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Skills/Experience:
- LPN license required.
- OB/GYN or emergency room experience preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
- ACLS and IV therapy training required.
- Working knowledge of contraceptive technology preferred.
- Previous experience using interviewing, education and crisis intervention skills with clients.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic clerical and math skills required.
- Able to speak and write English.
- Ability to operate a computer, keyboard and multi-key telephone.
- Ability to function well as a team member.
- Ability to treat patients with respect and sensitivity.
- Ability to communicate with individuals of diverse backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sensitivity in dealing with clients sexuality and reproductive healthcare choices.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and Saturdays and rotate through after-hours medical call system.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, sit, talk, hear, stand, bend, walk; use hands and fingers, handle or operate objects, reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and use repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
- Ability to get to the work site; also other PPSWO health centers and meetings when required.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases and blood and body fluids that may contain HIV and/or HBV.
- May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and offensive odors.
