Director of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Lead the implementation of Feeding America’s plan for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) rooted in our mission, outcomes, and vision for ending hunger. Ensure that our ED&I vision is infused into the DNA of the network and national office through its systems, tools, policies, structures, and practices. Serve as a member of the Equity and Programs Leadership Team and as a member of Feeding America’s Senior Management Group.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and Execute the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Strategy: In collaboration with the Chief Equity & Programs Officer, the Chief HR Officer and National Council, support the development of a network-wide strategy and plan for Equity, Diversity& Inclusion (ED&I) including the development of a long-term equity goal. Ensure plan will continue to advance outcomes across communities and populations disproportionately impacted by food insecurity.  Ensure that the vision for ED&I vision is embedded into the culture of the national office through its systems, tools, behaviors, policies, structures, and practices.  Working with key FANO and network partners, lead the development and implementation of appropriate infrastructure (i.e. department, advisory, learning communities, performance management/accountability systems) to ensure effective execution of equity and inclusion strategies.
  • Serve as Trusted Advisor and Thought Partner to Colleagues. Support and advocate for an equitable and inclusive workplace, incorporating feedback from teammates.  Champion a positive, empathetic culture that provide feedback and training to develop skills and/or awareness using an ED&I lens. Work with others across the organization to create an environment that facilitates productive dialogue about disparities and their root causes and lays a foundation for action.
  • Capacity Development and Training:  Lead the development and implementation of programs and processes to build knowledge, skill and competency around equity and inclusion for network members and FANO staff.  This may include design and delivery of training programs as well as managing relationships with external partners as needed to deliver training and support to achieve our plan.  The Network Capability Team and HR Team will be key partners in this work.
  • Partnership Development: Identify opportunities for supporting or creating partnerships and networks with organizations, communities and populations disproportionately impacted by food insecurity to advance our goals of improving food security in the United States.
  • Communication & Progress Monitoring: Develop consistent communication and feedback mechanisms to ensure our ability to identify, discuss, and address equity issues impacting people facing hunger, the network, and staff. Stay abreast of research and best practice in equity and inclusion and surface implications. Develop communication systems to share best practices, highlight bright spots, and keep staff and food banks apprised of key initiatives and activities.  Develop network-wide feedback loops and systems to collect input, analyze data (both qualitative and quantitative), and share progress.
  • Team Management and Leadership: Serve as member of the Senior Management Group and provide network leadership. Effectively manage and develop other team members (direct reports, project teams, etc.) with an assets-based approach, cultivating a collaborative and inclusive team culture that seeks to coach and empower.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS or equivalent experience ideally in human behavior or social impact related discipline.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Significant experience in leadership roles working within complex operating environment – ideally a network structure, is required.
  • Bilingual strongly desired

Required Leadership Competencies

  • Translates Strategy to Operational Goals – Work with key stakeholders to co-create a network strategy for ED&I and translate into operating plans. Capable of navigating complex issues to effectively lead implementation of strategy, manage multiple stakeholders, make decisions, and drive strong results. The ability to work across teams and with diverse leaders is essential.
  • Leverages Functional Expertise - Experience operationalizing equity, diversity and inclusion plans within complex systems and structures with proven ability to leverage this expertise in the service of transforming organizational culture, policy and practice.
  • Leads Change - Experience leading complex, major ED&I change initiatives; demonstrated skills in adaptive leadership and change management including leveraging data-based observation, interpretation and intervention to engage stakeholders in shaping and implementing solutions.
  • Collaborates Internally & Externally - Strong track record of building alignment and working collaboratively in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Communicates Effectively - Ability to successfully communicate internally and externally bridging differing stakeholder views and needs to gain the confidence of, and credibility with, key stakeholders.

Required Technical Competencies and Experience

  • Demonstrated background that includes experience in leading and facilitating impact efforts focused on issues of equity and social justice.
  • Significant strengths in cultural competence and ability to navigate diverse cultures and views to create constructive, results focused, dialogue and discussion.
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills with proven track record of successful design and delivery of formal training, working groups such as communities of practice and speaking and presenting with key stakeholders in other forums such as conferences.
  • Additionally, successful candidates will have experience leveraging data and excellent listening skills to shape their perspective and resulting programs, policies and processes across our network.
