ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND: Communities United (CU) is a growing intergenerational grassroots organization that works across communities on issues of education justice, increasing access to affordable and quality healthcare and housing, youth investment, and justice reinvestment. CU’s organizing approach actively engages and develops community and institutional members to advance social, racial, and economic justice. Recently named one of five global awardees of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Racial Equity 2030 Challenge.

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Development Associate will work as part of Communities United’s development team to support fundraising, donor engagement, grant writing and management, and identifying funding opportunities to further the organization’s mission. 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND BACKGROUND:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in related fields required.
  • At least two years of experience in fundraising or related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of diverse fundraising strategies (corporate, grassroots, foundation, and individual donor).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in writing.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing, donor cultivation, and event planning.
  • Passion, enthusiasm, focus, creativity, and a positive outlook.
Areas of Responsibility: 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of annual fundraising plans and goals to ensure that the organization meets its fundraising goals. 
  • Support the development team in researching funding opportunities.
  • Perform grant writing and development of program reports.
  • Coordinate events and activities to promote the organization’s fundraising efforts. 
  • Maintain donor databases and ensures accuracy of data. 
  • Collaborate with other program staff to ensure that all fundraising activities are aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Support the development of annual program reports. 
  • Assist with fundraising events. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in related fields required.

  • Demonstrated competency in Microsoft Office suite ((Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Quickbooks, Google Workspace, task management software or equivalent, and calendaring and screen-sharing/online meeting applications
  • Passionate about the mission of the organization and its impact in the community.

  • Work is performed primarily indoors; remote or hybrid work is a possibility
