SPACE on Ryder Farm, a non-profit residency program and organic farm, seeks its first full time Managing Director to work hand in hand with the Founding Executive Director, senior staff leadership, and Board of Directors, on top-level leadership, decision making and strategy for the rapidly growing organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, this full-time position is responsible for: 

  • Financial and general management; 

  • External relations; 

  • Operations and human resources;

  • Strategy 

As of 2019, SPACE’s annual operating budget is approximately $1.5 million and comprised of 70% contributed revenue.

Areas of Responsibility: 

FINANCE AND GENERAL MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee the annual budgeting process, with high-level buy-in from the Executive Director and Board and contributions from the Directors and departments of the organization;

  • Conduct high level analysis of organization’s financial health, and operationalize action items based on such analysis;

  • Ensure that the organization’s financial operations are in line with best business practices, not-for-profit IRS standards, and GAAP;

  • Analyze and manage cashflow, including overseeing applications for line(s) of credit if/when needed;

  • Craft and implement strategy for maintaining financial health and long term growth, including tactical and strategic management of the Board designated endowment and other restricted funds; 

  • Present financials to the Finance committee of the Board at quarterly meetings, and in coordination with the Treasurer support and/or present financials at quarterly Board meetings;

  • Oversee and manage the annual audit and 990 process (with day-to-day support from Business Manager) through to Board approval;

  • Oversee the negotiation and execution of contracts with outside vendors and independent contractors;

  • Along with the Board Treasurer, oversee the creation and implementation of financial policies; 

  • Oversee financial policies for all newly created SPACE programming (CSA Program, Music Program, etc.); 

  • Supervise all other business matters, including insurance and compliance.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

  • Fundraising

    • Manage the Development team and the department’s goals and operations, including managing performance;

    • Approve all foundation, corporate and government grant proposals;

    • With the Executive Director, identify, cultivate, steward major gift prospects and support the Executive Director and Board in their fundraising efforts;

    • Oversee annual development strategy (campaigns, including mid-year farm host appeal and end of year campaign) with contributions from the Executive Director; 

    • Oversee the Development team on budgeting and tracking of contributed revenue, and the creation of budgets and financial materials for grant proposals and reports;

    • With the Executive Director, senior staff and key Board members, strategize future Capital Campaign needs and wants;

  • Other External Relations

    • Identify opportunities for earned revenue growth;

    • Identify opportunities to maximize exposure in the arts, culture and agriculture communities.

OPERATIONS AND HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Manage the Operations team and the department’s goals and operations, including managing performance;

  • Supervise the development, implementation and enforcement of all organizational policies; conduct bi-annual assessments of SPACE’s current staffing and operational structure and implement necessary organizational structure changes;

  • Manage the Director of Operations to fulfill major organizational goals, such as: 

    • Lead the annual staff retreat, orientation and season post mortem;

    • Implement a formal review process for all employees and select contractors.

STRATEGY

  • Work with the Executive Director and Board to set strategic course for SPACE.

Skills/Experience: 

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have 6-8 years of proven nonprofit management, finance and fundraising experience across a wide variety of funding sources, strong organizational and time management skills, at least 2 years experience managing a team of at least 3 individuals, acute attention to detail, and strong communication skills with internal team members and external contacts. The candidate should have at least 2 years in a lead internal role on a non-profit audit. 

SPACE on Ryder Farm is an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ grassroots organization. The Managing Director should be dexterous, entrepreneurial, and proficient with tools like Quickbooks, Google Suite, and other relevant software. They should be excited to lead in a multitude of ways. This is a full-time leadership position working out of both SPACE’s Manhattan and Brewster offices. During the residency and farm season (June-October), at minimum four days a week spent in Brewster, NY.

Compensation/Benefits: 

SALARY: $75,000-$90,000 based on experience

Health insurance stipend, paid time off, local housing support in Brewster (if required). SPACE observes a semi-monthly payroll. SPACE on Ryder Farm is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
