Development Manager

Summary:  This position leads the development programs for the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) and reports to the BCPA’s Performing Arts Manager.  The Development Manager is a leadership position within the BCPA responsible for building relationships within the corporate, municipal and private communities. This position works with the Performing Arts Manager to identify programming and granting opportunities likely to impact the scope and direction of the BCPA’s operation. Responsibilities include the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of contributed income from individuals, corporations and foundations for the purpose of supporting the vision and mission of the BCPA. This position manages grant applications and researches new funding opportunities. The Development Manager may supervise 1-3 interns and participate in the hiring process of interns and support staff.

 

The incumbent must possess superb public presentation skills and capitalizes on opportunities to promote public awareness of, and appreciation for, the mission and work of the BCPA. This position requires creativity, excellent writing, communication and organizational skills. Also required is a record of success in achieving or exceeding goals for contributed income.

 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Develops, plans, promotes, and implements successful fundraising programs. Establishes short and long range goals for unrestricted funding sources. Strategizes and orchestrates methods of approach to organization donors. Solicits funds from individuals, corporations and foundations.

 

Cultivates donor relationships. Maintains a portfolio of funders and works with the Performing Arts Manager to develop effective solicitation and cultivation strategies. Maintains solicitation calendar and researches prospective funders.

 

Provides input to Performing Arts Manager on potential funding sources for planned or contemplated programming, including projections of income from current and potential funding sources.

 

Oversees the Planned Giving Program. Tracks progress of pending Legacy and Bequest gifts.  Fulfills requests, produce correspondences and encourage partial or early disbursement of funds when appropriate.

 

Researches, selects, and solicits financial grant support for artistic and educational programming, facility development, and new construction. Serves as primary grant researcher and writer.

 

Manages and monitors grant activity and prepares final reports of income and associated expense items.

 

With Community Engagement Manager, serves as staff liaison to Arts Partners organization. Represents BCPA with donors and facilitates other activities of this "Friends" group.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required. Degree in arts management, English or communications, business administration, or a related field preferred.
Applicant must have a minimum of two (2) years development and grant writing experience.
Skills/Experience: 

Knowledge of:

  • Fund raising practices and strategies.
  • Non-profit arts operations and the performing arts.
  • Grant sources, grant writing, management and reporting.
  • Metrics to measure fundraising progress.
  • Budgeting and financial reconciliation.
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, e-mail applications. Knowledge of fundraising databases preferred.
  • Principles of supervision, training, coaching and mentoring.

Skill in:

  • Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal and intercultural communication and in public speaking.
  • Developing creative fundraising approaches.
  • Obtaining grants.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with minimum direction.
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Using arithmetic and basic descriptive statistics as applicable to this position.

Ability to:

  • Display interest, enthusiasm and affinity for fundraising and in working with people.
  • Communicate persuasively and promote the BCPA and its mission.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with donors, potential donors, other members of the public and other employees.
  • Work collaboratively with other BCPA staff.
  • Make public presentations in relation to the duties of this position.
  • Develop and present recommendations to management as appropriate.
  • Set and meet fundraising goals develop and employ corrective strategies as required to meet goals and objectives and produce high-quality work under shifting deadlines.
  • Track, measure, evaluate results and report on fundraising and other activities.
  • Develop and manage budgets.
  • Understand and use arithmetic and basic descriptive statistics as applicable to this position.
  • Direct, appraise and discipline staff in a respectful and constructive manner.
  • Use a computer and job related software.
  • Travel throughout City facilities and to external sites.
  • Attend meetings and events outside of regular business hours and on weekends as needed.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $49,610.00-$70,536.00
