Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a Sr. Development Officer - Individual Giving. The ideal candidate for this role will be responsible for managing relationships with major donor prospects determined to have the ability to make gifts at or above $100k. As a skilled networking professional, the successful candidate must demonstrate tenacity in building relationships with individuals and foundations. The Sr. Development Officer is charged with developing and implementing strategies for securing financial support from a portfolio of 150+ donor prospects. The candidate must possess the ability to convert relationships into financial gifts that will ensure annual fundraising goals are met or exceeded.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Establish a strategic and systematic focus on closing five-, six-, and seven-figure commitments from high net-worth individuals
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward qualified prospects and donors, managing a portfolio of approximately 150 qualified relationships in a defined territory
  • Conduct and/or coordinate face-to-face visits, and other activities with donors.
  • Meet or exceed team’s multi-million dollar annual revenue goals

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Establish a strategic and systematic focus on closing five-, six-, and seven figure commitments from high net-worth individuals (50%. This is strategy and development of the solicitation process and plan.)
  • Work independently and be self-motivated in initiating contacts with potential donors. (20% Meetings with the team, and supervisor, plus collaboration with colleagues for best practices.)
  • Routinely engage donors in portfolio for face-to-face meetings, donor engagement and affiliate introductions. Work with affiliates to collaborate and review donor lists.. (30%. This work includes scheduling and follow up with donors, as well as a minimum of bi-annual meetings with affiliates for donor list review.)

PLAN ACTIVATION, SOLICITATIONS AND REPORTING

  • Demonstrate a keen sense of curiosity for donors – seeking to “crack the code” of what compels each donor to give substantially by asking the right questions – and able to personally adapt as needed to meet the needs of donors and compassionately articulate the Habitat story. (50%. This is the foundation of fundraising.)
  • Develop strategy for major gifts prospects, and carry out strategies for solicitation of these prospects (15%. This is the identification activation of the strategic solicitation process and plan.)
  • Guide the development of compelling proposals and presentations and reports (10%.)
  • Close complex agreements for Diaspora gifts, Campaign, Planned Gifts and Financial Products. 20%.
  • Provide accurate and timely activity and pipeline reports and revenue forecasts
  • Collaborate with team to analyze portfolios and strategize upgrades, and with Corporate Programs colleagues to cultivate individual gifts from corporate partner executives. (5%. The remaining 5% is independent work to cultivate individual gifts within the portfolio.)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 6+ years related work experience
  • 5+ years of front-line experience in leadership gifts development in a large, nationwide setting, preferably as part of a nationally deployed team
  • Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising in an environment of similar complexity.
  • Experience in a multi-national federated organization with the ability to thrive
  • $10 million+ in total gifts closed personally during her/his career
  • Successful experience closing complex six- and seven-figure commitments including planned gifts, campaign and investment options
  • Innovative, creative, strategic and analytical thinker
  • Ability to engage senior managers in donor visits, and to earn and maintain their confidence
  • Superior presentation skills, including the presence to deal effectively with diverse constituencies including principal donors, national staff and leadership in the field.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, and to listen, and an unusual capacity to engage, inspire and persuade
  • Passion for and commitment to the HFH mission
  • Ability to ignite a passion and to create and communicate excitement about HFH’s compelling mission
  • Strong development-related technology skills
  • A self-starter with a high level of energy, self-confidence, and a positive “can-do” attitude are essential, as is humility.
