The Development Director is a key partner to the Executive Director and Board of Directors and leads all fund development and communication activities. The person filling this position must understand the integration of fundraising, communications, community engagement, accounting and marketing functions and have the ability to work with other staff, the board of directors and volunteers to plan and implement initiative that furthers the organizations strategic priorities.

The focus of this position is to:

  • Significantly strengthen the organization by ensuring a diversified and stable base of funding from all sources
  • Enhance public awareness of and stakeholder confidence in the organization
  • Assure positive donor relations
  • Provide for the strategic deployment of fundraising volunteers
Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide leadership and direction in all development activities
  • Oversee all fundraising activities, including annual and major gift campaigns, fund-raising events, donor recognition and grant writing
  • With the Fundraising Manager, design and implement a multi-year fundraising plan to identify, cultivate, solicit and provide stewardship for prospective and current individual, corporate, foundation and government donors
  • Oversee successful execution of public relations and marketing activities to advance strategic goals, develop and maintain a positive agency image, and increase all types of recognition for our organization
  • Ensure the management and effective use of the donor database
  • Serves as the primary staff liaison to the Resource Development Committee
  • Works with the Executive Director to prepare an annual budget for resource development activities that include fundraising, public relations and marketing
  • Hires, trains, supervises and mentors Resource Development staff and volunteers

General

  • Adhere to HFHA’s covenant, mission, policies and budget when representing the affiliate and conducting affiliate business.
  • He/she will seek to provide donors, volunteers, family partners and community members the opportunity to participate in all aspects of Habitat
  • Supervise the Fundraising Manager and recruit, train and utilize development volunteers
  • Comfortable in an ecumenical work environment

Resource Development

  • Develop and implement affiliate’s Resource Development Plans (Operations and Construction activities) in coordination with the Executive Director and the Resource Development Committee
  • Actively identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of corporate and individual prospects for multi-year and/or one-time gifts and sponsorships as provided for in the Development Plan. Systematically engage and inspire individual donors. This includes systems to remind donors of pledges, thank them for their donations, communicate opportunities to engage with the agency, and grow long-term support over time
  • Develop, in conjunction with the Faith Relations Committee, an inter-faith-based giving program that includes pledged and/or budgeted financial giving, invitations for volunteer partnerships and covenants
  • Identify, secure, and administer grants; ensure compliance with grant requirements upon award
  • Communicate with appropriate staff on all in-kind donation offers and needs. Publicize needs through website and newsletter
  • Administer, promote and encourage community donor programs such as Pick-Click-Give, United Way and Public Sector Campaigns, corporate matching and other opportunities
  • Coordinate with HFHA team, active committee members, and House Sponsors to ensure consistent donor recognition and appreciation

Communication and Marketing

  • Generate customized, strategic materials to support development activities including proposals, presentations, case for support and stewardship reports
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, develop and produce periodic and timely communications via newsletters, press releases, website and social media updates as well as an Annual Report
  • Participate in media interviews and events where possible to increase awareness and support of HFHA and their activities

Reporting and Management

  • Plan, implement and report on resource development budget
  • Prepare development reports for monthly Board of Directors’ meetings
  • Collaborate with other staff in the development and maintenance of a centralized donor database that allows for efficient tracking and reporting of relevant donor information. Assist in monthly reconciliation of receivables for donor data to accounting data
  • Collaborate with HFHA team for annual audit and finance processes
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and/or previous work experience in public relations, marketing, fundraising, business development, advocacy or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • A clear and passionate enthusiasm for the mission and principles of Habitat for Humanity Anchorage (HFHA)
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, with ability to maintain effective communication with staff, partners, donors, volunteers and diverse members of the community
  • Demonstrated record of fundraising/resource development, preferably in the Anchorage, Alaska market
  • Ability to establish rapport with people from a variety of ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds
  • Strategic thinker, self-starter and possess the ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Technical and creative writing skills
  • Computer proficiency (e.g. database, spreadsheet, graphics software, Microsoft Office)

Preferred:

  • CRFE Certified
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce
  • Comfortable and proven media relations
  • Experience with HUD funding and compliance (CHODO, HOME, CDBG, SHOP) or similar government grant programs.
