The staff accountant manages all accounts payable and the day to day input of financial information to order to maintain an accurate and timely statement of financial position by analyzing data & asking “why” questions.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Generate financial reports (15% of time): income statement, balance sheet, financial dashboard, investment dashboard, financial statement narrative
- Analyze data; ask “why”
- Understand meaning behind #s
- Update department budgets monthly
- Maintain accuracy of data in Financial Edge & Stratus Live (10% of time)
- Complete monthly reconciling (30% of time)
- Manage the accounts payable requests process weekly and pay designations (20% of time)
- Deliver a clean audit (5% of time):
- Prepare for auditor visit
- Aim for less than 8 auditor correcting entries
- Collaborate with other departments to achieve organizational goals (10% of time):
- Understanding work beyond numbers
- Communicating with other departments to educate them as to progress and status
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree considered in lieu of work experience.
Skills/Experience:
- 5-plus years of professional work experience managing the finances of a not-for-profit organization preferred. Relevant experience in the for-profit sector or a related
- 5-plus years professional general ledger experience
Skills
- Deep understanding of 501c3 financial statements
- Proficiency with accounting software and MS Excel and familiarity with database software
- Demonstrated analytical ability
- Understanding of and commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of United Way
