The Chief Impact Officer supports the mission of UWCNM through the development, evaluation, monitoring and reporting of UWCNM’s Community Impact Agenda and the management of an Impact Team that provides Community Fund grants, Community Impact Projects, internal UWCNM programs and related initiatives, to accomplish the Community Impact Agenda.

Due to the business model evolution at UWCNM, it is imperative that the organizational structure evolves along with the business model.  The Chief Impact Officer will oversee data analysis and leverage programmatic fundraising opportunities.

The Chief Impact Officer’s top priority is to create social change that leads to measurably improved lives and stronger communities in central New Mexico by linking donor, volunteer and advocates’ aspiration to need and by catalyzing their commitment to the mission. They cultivate and manages relationships toward accomplishing the organization’s mission and toward common goals. In addition, they work to understand the roles and contributions of all sectors of the community to mobilize resources through meaningful engagement.

The Chief Impact Officer leads the Community Impact Team to develop shared and measurable goals, creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies and innovations for broad investment and impact. They ensure that the Impact Team acts ethically and with integrity, fosters trust in the community, and demonstrates the value of engagement with UWCNM.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Lead the Planning, Development and Execution of UWCNM’s Impact Agenda

  • Establish and implement measurable goals for UWCNM’s Impact Agenda.
  • Assess priorities, create and execute timelines, continuously monitor and evaluate goals. Work with internal and external teams to successfully execute strategies and develop related tasks.
  • Develop successful proposals as investment opportunities and attract funds. Gather support, including people and money, to promote programs and projects that advance impact priorities.
  • As the Community Impact agenda has created a clear vision for UWCNM to focus on strategies such as Mission: Families and Mission: Graduate, a Chief Impact Officer is needed to integrate these strategies into the core of UWCNM’s work.

Support UWCNM’s Strategic Direction and Business Planning

  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the United Way network and of UWCNM’s business to effectively create strategies. Understand the local business and nonprofit environments and build the means to engage the community.
  • Engage in the general business and financial principles of the organization to effectively lead, manage and align resources for top performance, including reading financial statements and creating budgets.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to ensure the UWCNM Leadership Team, Board, staff, and volunteers are strategically aligned.  Form a strong partnership with Development and Marketing to position UWCNM as the thought leader around our mission and ensure alignment across functions to maximize resources to achieve measurable results.
  • Serve as a leader in the organization as a member of the Leadership Team to provide a united, visible and strong presence across the organization, aligning all UWCNM’s efforts to the Impact Agenda in accordance with the organization’s strategic plan.

Recruit, Develop and Manage Community Impact Team

  • Build and lead a diverse team to accomplish the organization’s mission and Impact Agenda. Responsible for hiring and evaluation, demanding high performance and results and ensuring team members’ work is aligned with mission and strategy.
  • Invest time and resources in training, development, support for, and succession of the team; effectively delegate to accomplish goals and to build team members’ capability and confidence.
  • Coach and mentor team members; receive and provide feedback in a constructive way that builds confidence within the team; address performance issues as needed in a timely manner.

Build Strategic Relationships

  • Create strategic partnerships to advance the mission of UWCNM and the Impact Agenda, to benefit UWCNM and the community. Know key players and community leaders; maintain and expand the network of partners. Build skills, knowledge and abilities to challenge the organization to reach its potential.
  • Act as an effective spokesperson for UWCNM and its work. Engage, listen and understand community aspirations through conversations and meetings with donors, volunteers, nonprofit and business partners, and other community leaders and members. Establish credibility as a leader on critical issues and solutions affecting central New Mexico.
  • Implement shared initiatives and work inclusively with individuals, networks, and organizations to explore shared interests and create and act on common goals.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

  • Address and manage complex issues to achieve desired results, including the ability to gather, interpret and use relevant data to drive strategy development, make decisions and drive results.
  • Develop criteria for making decisions, weighing the costs, benefits, risks, and chances for success when making decisions. Facilitate group decision-making processes by breaking down complex problems and solutions.
  • Develop solutions and use analysis and critical thinking skills to solve problems. Understand and manage agency, business, and other partners’ constraints, leveraging challenges into opportunities.

Articulate the UWCNM message

  • Distill complex information into a simple and compelling message for maximum clarity, understanding and impact. Present the work of UWCNM using examples that are relevant to community priorities and aspirations.
  • Write clearly and concisely; use multiple platforms to reach diverse audiences. Effective public speaker and presenter, with the ability to inspire others to act in service to the organization and the community.
  • Work effectively with the Development and Marketing Teams to develop and communicate compelling messages. Able to assess progress and describe results to collaborating partners and to the larger community

Assist with Operational Planning and Execution

  • Establish effective and efficient processes to align the Impact Team’s priorities with the organization’s goals, strategy and mission. Collaborate effectively within the organization and support team members to do the same.
  • Inspire and motivate employees to help build the culture of UWCNM, internally and externally.
  • Engage donors and volunteers to help execute the organization’s strategy and accomplish the mission.
Educational Background: 
At least Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in social service/justice, nonprofit management, public administration, business, or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least eight to ten years supervisory and volunteer engagement experience, including recruitment and formal meeting coordination and management.
  • Knowledge of human service delivery systems and demonstrated ability to research issues, develop, implement and evaluate strategies, prepare proposals and request for proposals, and conduct grant management activities; Demonstrated expertise in program evaluation and outcome measurement.
  • Ability to understand the social, economic and political landscape of UWCNM’s four-county area.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse social/economic audiences in groups and one-on-one; a perceptive listener. Proven public speaking experience and writing skills required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, showing initiative, creativity, self-discipline, effective time and project management skills, as well as ability to work closely with and support UWCNM staff and volunteer teams, community leaders, donors, and other partners, demonstrating a blend of leadership presence and cooperative work style.
  • A compelling commitment to the philanthropic sector, the quality of life for residents of central New Mexico and the vision and mission of UWCNM.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • All prior years of United Way service will be counted toward the achievement of benefit levels.
