Coach, Financial Empowerment Center

This position works within UWSC’s Bold Goal of Financial Empowerment, to help low to moderate income families boost earnings, reduce expenses, and make appropriate financial decisions that lead to asset building through an integrated service model approach.  The Financial Empowerment Centers provide individuals and families with services across two critical and interconnected areas: financial coaching and access to income supports. The Financial Coach provides direct services to low to moderate-income individuals who are enrolled as Financial Empowerment Center participants.  Financial counseling and coaching involve an ability to engage and motivate clients, a strong understanding of personal finances, and the ability to teach that knowledge to others.  The financial coach is responsible for assisting clients in developing plans of action that are intended to help the client reach their goals and achieve financial stability.  The financial coach is expected to focus services in a culturally competent, one-on-one counseling format.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • 70% Provide one on one financial counseling/coaching: Work with clients to understand their current financial health, resolve financial issues, and identify financial goals with a lens towards proactive financial management. Assist clients in creating a budget and understanding their credit report and credit score. Develop strategies and action plans to assist clients with budgeting, increasing savings, reducing debt, building credit, and accessing healthy banking.  Provide tools, resources, and accountability to help clients meet their goals and achieve financial empowerment.
  • 20% Outcome tracking and reporting: Track the stories and successes of program participants through ongoing data collection. Utilize FECBot, a cloud-based client management system, to accurately input client information including demographics, budget, and Financial Health Assessments and to document client progress and outcomes in a timely manner. Assist in the convening and development of community-level data measuring progress in the area of Financial Empowerment.
  • 5% Develop relationships with community organizations and partners: Develop and utilize a network of referral organizations to assist clients in meeting goals (e.g. local housing counseling agency, workforce development, legal aid, public benefits etc.)  Conduct presentations and attend outreach events to promote UWSC services, provide education about financial topics, and recruit new FEC clients.
  • 5% Assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program: Attend IRS volunteer certification to become certified as a volunteer tax preparer.  Assist in preparing or quality reviewing tax returns and supervising volunteer shifts at the FEC, as needed. 

JOB RELATIONSHIPS WITH: Director, Financial Empowerment, Associate Vice President of Community Impact, Vice President of Community Impact, Community Impact Department, Manager, Bank On; Bank On Coalition, Manager, Bridges Summit County, City and County officials, Corporate and Community Engagement staff, partner agencies.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Communications, Social Work, Public Administration, Education or similar required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with the United Way preferred.
  • Prefer candidate with knowledge in financial service industry or direct client service.
  • Candidate must demonstrate a passion for assisting individuals who are unbanked and/or underbanked.
  • A strong understanding of personal finances, particularly in the areas of budgeting, asset building, and credit building.
  • Competent in MS Office products.
  • Interest in the improvement of the Summit County community.
  • Previous work experience with the FEC’s target population, and/or the ability to provide financial counseling/coaching services in a culturally sensitive manner.

PHYSICAL/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Position is primarily a normal office setting, requiring long periods of sedentary work at a desk and computer.
  • Ability to routinely travel throughout multi-floor office, walking, climbing stairs.
  • Minimal lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally.
  • After-hours event attendance occasionally.
  • Valid driver license and proof of insurance.
  • Access to reliable insured automobile to be used for work-related travel in Summit County area.
  • Work hours that may be outside of the standard 8am-5pm work day. (i.e. Saturdays or until 8pm)
