ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Harm Reduction Coalition is a national advocacy and capacity-building organization that works to promote the health and dignity of individuals and communities who are affected by drug use. With offices in New York and California, we advance harm reduction policy and practice through five core programs: 1) harm reduction policy and advocacy; 2) national training and capacity building initiatives; 3) national and regional conferences; 4) publications and resources, and; 5) technical assistance on overdose prevention education, hepatitis C prevention and treatment, syringe access expansion, and the US opioid crisis.

 

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Development and Communications (DDC) is responsible for developing and implementing Harm Reduction Coalition’s fundraising and communication strategies. Working collaboratively with the executive team, the DDC provides strategic direction on constituent relationship management, cultivation of institutional giving, and the broader communications strategy. The DDC is responsible for creating and implementing a long-term fundraising and communications plan that guide Harm Reduction Coalition’s financial growth and brand-management. A central focus of the DDC is to develop a robust individual giving program that is supported by a strong communications strategy. The ideal person will be a dynamic entrepreneurial individual who enjoys relationship building, soliciting, and developing long range strategies to expand Harm Reduction Coalition’s visibility and funding base.This job can be held in our New York office or Oakland office.

Areas of Responsibility: 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising (70-80%)

  • Design, implement, and monitor a multi-year fund development program that diversifies revenue through new funding sources.

  • Guide and manage the individual donor solicitation process, including major gifts and planned giving.

  • Cultivate relationships with individuals who serve as organizational ambassadors/spokespeople.

  • Use customer relationship management (CRM) platforms to plan, implement, and evaluate the fund development program.

  • Meet with and facilitate introductions and coordinate meetings between appropriate HRC staff and prospective individual/institutional donors.

  • Prepare and submit high quality grant proposals and reports.

  • Prepare effective written and online fundraising appeals and campaigns that result in sustained and upgraded giving.

  • Plan and execute multiple donor cultivation events per year.

  • Create, implement, and monitor development policies and protocols, such as a gift acceptance policy and donor recognition levels.

  • Prepare and review monthly fundraising dashboard with executive team.

Communications (20-30%)

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the agency’s communications strategy.

  • Provide strategic direction on development of media projects to drive fundraising and visibility.

  • Provide strategic direction on social media, web presence, email marketing, and social marketing campaigns that increase visibility and awareness, promote constituent engagement, and advance strategic priorities.

  • Ensure publication/resources are aligned with established branding and style guidelines.

  • Coordinate paid and donated media placements.

  • Prepare and review monthly communications dashboard with executive team

 

General Management and Leadership

  • In collaboration with the management team, cultivate creative, collaborative relationships with non-traditional community partners.  

  • Supervise the communications & development support staff, and department consultants.

  • Participate in weekly directors’ team meeting.

  • Coordinate and lead the communications team meeting.

  • Prepare and manage annual communications and development budget.

Skills/Experience: 

QUALIFICATIONS

People who currently use or have a history of substance use, sex workers, people of color, women, members of the LGBTQIA+ communities, and people living with HIV/AIDS and/or hepatitis C, or people who have experienced housing insecurity are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • A minimum of five years of experience in a fundraising position, with both individual and institutional giving required.

  • Proven success in developing appeals through traditional and emerging methods.

  • Knowledge of national and local funders that support public health, health, and social justice initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute donor cultivation events.

  • Basic knowledge of communications and marketing techniques, preferably in a nonprofit setting.

  • Keen attention to detail, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite; proficient in one or more of the following CRM systems/platforms: Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, Salsa, or an equivalent system.

  • Experience with MailChimp, Constant Contact, or equivalent email management system strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, or similar website content management system preferred.

  • Experience using social media (including Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter) as a fundraising tool required.

  • Must demonstrate strong design sensibility.

  • A passion for Harm Reduction Coalition’s issues and ability to articulate and translate them into an effective communications and fundraising strategy.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $75,000-95,000 annual

Supervises: 1-2 full-time staff member + department consultants

Status: Full-time, exempt

Travel: Position requires moderate travel (approximately 14 days per year).
