The Community School Director (CSD) will bring together groups to organize collective action with partners within a school to help all students have equitable, consistent, and quality educational opportunities. The CSD will rally school staff and partners to eliminate the achievement gap through planning and implementing strategies to improve student and school success in areas of community and parent support, principal leadership, quality instruction, and school culture.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Bring together and organize collaborative working groups of school and related partners

  • Cultivate relationships with stakeholders inside and outside of the school building
  • Provide facilitation, strategic thinking, and project management to the activities of the school’s priority partnership groups
  • Lead partnership groups through planning for and taking action to reduce the achievement gap in the school
  • Manage group logistics, data, processes, and resources
  • Based on priorities established with principal and other school partners, build resources, interventions, and partnerships, and strengthen the partnerships’ ability to lead and sustain those priorities

Engage in continuous improvement processes

  • With support from a data team, equip school partnerships with the data and analytics to know where and how to invest their time, effort, and financial resources
  • With support, provide data and analytics to school partners to help them identify a target, desired outcomes, and success measures
  • Plan, implement, and monitor interventions against outcomes, and lead school partnerships to modify practices based on findings

Be accountable for results and foster the sense of accountability for results in others

  • Establish personal and group norms that inspire partners to feel highly accountable to reduce disparities based on race, ethnicity, income, and gender in the school
  • Raise issues that are impeding school success to school and district leadership with a spirit of humility and commitment to results
  • Work with school partners to develop a set of performance measures
  • Provide coaching for partners conducting improvement cycles
  • Track metrics of school success and internal performance measures

Contribute to the United Way of Salt Lake’s organizational goals

  • Coordinate with volunteer and grassroots teams for student, community member, and company engagement opportunities
  • Coordinate with resource development and help lead efforts related to donations, site visits, and marketing requests
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the work of one or more of UWSL’s networks focused on improving education outcomes at scale across our region
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in education, social science, humanities, sociology, public administration, or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ability to make sense of complex and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems; values different perspectives and cultures
  • Ability to consider systems that impact the work and provide strategic support
  • Comfortable addressing disparities related to race, ethnicity, income, and other factors
  • Ability to take on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm
  • Ability to remain focused and results driven, even under tough circumstances
  • Understands data fundamentals; skilled at helping others use and understand data
  • Ability to adapt approach and demeanor to the shifting demands of different situations
  • Skilled at aligning purpose and passion and motivating others into action
  • 2 years experience in education or a community-related role
  • Knowledge and understanding of community schools - the model and philosophy
  • Applied experience in and knowledge of educational core competencies (Tier I, II, III interventions), assessments, and Professional Learning Communities
  • Must pass UWSL and school district background checks
  • Spanish speaking a plus, but not required
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $51,000 to $60,000 per year
