Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) is accountable for achieving the fundraising and new business development goals of the Philanthropy team by growing our corporate and individual contributions, expanding our donor base and by managing key donor relationships. The CPO assigns goals and responsibilities to team members and coaches, develops and assesses the team. While primary responsibility is for Philanthropy goals, the CPO also actively contributes to the goals of UWGT as a whole and accepts other responsibilities as assigned based on the needs of the overall organization. UWGT is committed to working cross functionally to achieve our goals therefore our CPO will act as a role model and lead the Philanthropy team in working collaboratively across our organization to ensure that our mission is achieved.
Strategic Leadership
- Lead the creation of a fundraising strategy and create the plans that will ensure that UWGT's fundraising goals are achieved through multiple fundraising approaches/channels that reach a diversity of donors including, but not limited to, corporate campaigns, leadership and Tocqueville ($10K plus) donors, other individual donors, special interest groups, etc.
- Create an annual written fundraising and business development plan that is clear in its objectives, goals, target audiences, timelines and assignment of responsibilities.
- Be accountable for the fundraising performance of the Philanthropy team.
- Advise the CEO on the relationship building and fundraising opportunities that are strategic and of the highest priority and ensure that the CEO’s time is scheduled effectively in fundraising and donor cultivation processes and events.
- Create a focus on prospect and donor research. Be accountable for growth in the prospect pool for future relationship cultivation.
- Evaluate the fundraising activities annually to ensure quality, productivity and relevance towards meeting goals.
- Lead Engagement to create strategies that support fundraising and awareness-building goals as well as Program strategies that support the overall UWGT mission.
- Maintain a portfolio of top corporate, foundation, leadership and Tocqueville donors and prospects; develop and implement strategies for engagement in UWGT activities and increased giving. Work with UWGT team members and volunteers to develop a functional and effective donor pipeline of corporations, individuals, and foundations.
- Create regular opportunities for the Philanthropy team to meet with other UWGT departments to freely share knowledge, strategies, stories of impact and other important information that will enable the organization to successfully reach all of its goals in a collaborative, aligned manner.
- Serve as a passionate and informed advocate for UWGT. Clearly communicate the impact of our work, verbally and in writing, throughout corporate and community networks.
- Develop a Leadership/Affinity group strategy that supports engagement and increased donor/volunteer commitment to the success of UWGT.
- Act as a role-model and lead the Philanthropy team in embracing our cultural value that everyone of us is a relationship manager with responsibility for networking in order to connect potential donors and volunteers with the needs of our community partner organizations and agencies and ultimately our end-clients that are being served.
Team Leadership
- Lead the work of the Philanthropy team and ensure that the team is meeting or exceeding fundraising goals. Hire, develop, supervise, coach and evaluate team members and create a supportive, goal-oriented and productive work culture based on the organizational values of UWGT. Set performance goals for team members and evaluate performance against goals on a regular basis. Effectively coach team members and provide supportive and developmental feedback to enhance performance. Ensure that team members develop the technical, leadership and professional skills to be successful.
- Develop a high performance team culture focused on leadership and accountability at all levels, continuous learning, collaboration, measurement and goal achievement.
- Ensure that processes, procedures and assignments of responsibilities are designed to meet fundraising goals in an efficient, manageable and effective manner.
Collaborative Leadership
- Contribute to the organization’s strategic plan and direction in collaboration with the CEO and the leadership team.
- Work collaboratively with the Board and Community Engagement Committee by involving them in the planning and execution of the engagement and fundraising plan. Keep the Board informed of Philanthropy team activities; provide data relevant to tracking fundraising progress and planning. Keep the team informed of Board decisions and involve team members with the Board whenever possible/feasible.
- Train Board members in fundraising and help to identify and recruit new Board members.
- Work collaborative with Marketing on initiatives, social media and other fundraising support and collateral to be used by the Philanthropy team.
- Represent UWGT in the community on boards, panels and commissions and events that support UWGT’s community and fundraising goals.
- Stay informed and up-to-date on community, state and national issues that have a bearing on the work of UWGT and ensure that the Philanthropy team is also kept informed and current. Share knowledge freely with all UWGT members to develop awareness and relationship management skills across the organization.
- Develop a thorough knowledge of the founding, history, major accomplishments, challenges and the significant events affecting UWGT and United Way nationally. Keep all UWGT team members up to date appropriately.
- Actively support the goals of UWGT overall by executing responsibilities, as assigned, outside of the scope of Philanthropy. Be accountable for outcomes of all assignments.
Financial and Administrative
- Create and monitor the Philanthropy team budget. Work collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer and the entire leadership team in creating the organization’s overall budget by providing accurate information and the best forecasts possible.
- Assist Finance in collecting and reporting any data necessary for funder and other external requirements.
- Ensure that accurate and updated records of all communications and donor information are maintained by team in Andar, Salesforce and/or other CRM software. Ensure that customized donor data is accurately imported, exported, and edited in a variety of digital platforms and tools.
- Work with the Chief Information Officer to implement/refine Salesforce, Andar and other CRM software and ensure that software programs adequately support the needs of the Philanthropy team in meeting fundraising and client relationship management goals.
- Proven history of high-level, high-return fundraising, sales or business development results based on building strong, lasting relationships with a diversity of donors/customers and through a diversity of strategies that uniquely reach each type of donor.
- Proven experience in leading people and managing systems to achieve fundraising goals and substantial increases in revenue while cultivating a work culture that is high performing, developmental, innovative, creative, inspiring and fun. Ability to critically assess current processes and suggest improvements and to assess team member performance and development needs.
- Outstanding organizational skills to operationalize a strategic fundraising plan by identifying goals and objectives and specific actions to achieve them, setting priorities, delegating actions to team members and influencing upward and laterally in order to ensure that key actions in the plan are executed by all needed stakeholders including the CEO. Ability to evaluate results and adapt plan, as needed, to improve future performance.
- Comfortable building relationships with corporate and foundation leaders, high net-worth individuals and community leaders and with making high dollar “asks”.
- Experience with securing foundation, corporate and/or governmental grants.
- Financial skills to develop and manage within a departmental budget.
- Experience leading organizational and operational change. Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities simultaneously and delegate appropriately to ensure that all goals are being met.
- Experienced team player in a high-performing, collaborative leadership team. Demonstrate respect for the contributions of others. Able to build cooperative relationships with peers, share knowledge, learn from others and contribute to team and organizational goals in addition to individual achievements.

- Ability to comprehend and analyze financial and statistical data and donor databases. Understanding of data security principles and best practices.
- Ability to maintain accurate and updated records of all communications and donor information by actively utilizing Andar, Salesforce and/or other CRM software. Accurately import, export, and edit customized donor data in a variety of digital platforms and tools.
- Knowledge of and experience working in the Triangle and Johnston County is a plus.
