Position Summary:

 

This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). American Bird Conservancy is a fast-growing, results-focused nonprofit seeking employees with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to make a difference for birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Inspired by the wonder of birds, ABC achieves lasting results for the bird species most in need while also benefiting human communities, biodiversity, and the planet’s fragile climate.

The Advocacy Coordinator, Pesticides and Birds Campaign will primarily be responsible for coordinating and advancing legislative and regulatory action at the State level across the United States. The Advocacy Coordinator will work with the Director of Government Relations and Policy Team to identify avenues for viable action to reduce the impact of pesticides on birds through advancing legislation, regulations, and legal actions.

The Advocacy Coordinator will achieve their goals by analyzing legislation; writing legislation; performing grassroots, Grasstops, and direct lobbying/organizing; conducting outreach to stakeholders; building and maintaining coalitions; and identifying other opportunities for success and action. They will work closely with partners and also find areas for ABC to lead efforts, particularly in the American Southwest.

The Advocacy Coordinator will promote adoption of non-synthetic chemical pesticide management methods on public lands including National Wildlife Refuges. The Advocacy Coordinator will also assist the Director of Government Relations as needed with federal policy pertaining to the Pesticides and Birds Campaign, federal appropriations, and the Endangered Species Act.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated knowledge and/or background in organizing or policy. They will have strong oral and written communication skills, as well as an ability to analyze scientific, regulatory, legal, and legislative language. They will be a self-starter and work collaboratively with the Director of Government Relations and Policy Team.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Primary Duties:

 

  • Represent American Bird Conservancy virtually and in-person in multiple coalitions centered around state-level policy
  • Represent American Bird Conservancy virtually and in-person in multiple state legislatures
  • Analyze conservation impact of legislation and/or policy;
  • Analyze past legislative and regulatory efforts;
  • Write and place op-eds, letters to the editor, blog posts, and other forms of written communication;
  • Review and summarize scientific literature to guide conservation strategies;
  • Prepare fact sheets and other educational materials for various audiences;
  • Conduct strategic outreach to target audiences
Skills/Experience: 

Position Requirements:

 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in political science, sociology, biology, or other related fields
  2. 1-2 years experience in advocacy, grassroots organizing, and/or science communication preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  3. Strong interest in wildlife conservation and/or environmental toxicity
  4. Comfort with and ability to register as a federal lobbyist and, when needed, a state lobbyist
  5. Understanding of basic principles of biology, physiology, government, and/or law
  6. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  7. Self-motivated
  8. Grassroots organizing skills preferred, not required
  9. Strong writing skills
  10. Some graphic design/layout skills preferred, not required
  11. Authorized to work in the US or Permanent Resident
  12. Background screening required
