Development and Outreach Director

Washington Wildlife First is seeking a development and outreach director to create and execute a comprehensive fundraising and development plan and to help design and implement a communications and outreach strategy.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategic Development, Planning, and Management (~15%) (estimated ongoing time allotment, we expect significantly more time to be needed at the outset)

  • Develop a strategic fundraising and development plan to present to the executive director and board for review and approval.
  • Identify resources needed for the successful execution of the plan.
  • Develop annual fundraising goals and create tracking mechanisms to demonstrate progress.
  • Adjust fundraising and development plan as needed, with a full revision once a year.
  • Aid and advise on board recruitment and enlist board support in reaching development goals.
  • Work with executive director and board treasurer to create revenue forecasts.
  • Work with executive director and advocacy director to develop a communications strategy that will raise the organization’s profile, advance its advocacy campaigns, and attract new revenue sources.
  • Work with executive director and advocacy director to develop and maintain a master calendar of events, campaigns, and communications to support both fundraising and advocacy work.
  • Conceive and plan fundraising and outreach events and campaigns.
  • Develop strategies for keeping website and social media content fresh, timely, and compelling.
  • Assist with revision of strategic plan and organizational branding.
  • Provide regular reports to the executive director and board, presenting fundraising progress, outcomes, and recommendations for improvement.

Implementation of Fundraising Strategies (~60%)

  • Drive revenue for the organization using a variety of development strategies.
  • Run fundraising campaigns, including campaigns for GiveBig, Giving Tuesday, and end-of-year giving.
  • Organize fundraisers and other events aimed at attracting potential donors.
  • Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with the organization’s goals and programs; prepare and submit persuasive grant proposals; and oversee the grant management process, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting deadlines.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with donors, ensuring excellent donor stewardship and engagement.
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract new donors and retain existing donors, focusing on building long-term relationships that result in annual giving.
  • Acknowledge and recognize donor contributions in a timely and meaningful manner, including with personalized communications, recognition programs, and donor-only events.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to develop high-net-worth donors.
  • Begin a planned giving program.
  • Identify and pursue new strategies for raising revenue.
  • Translate advocacy content, campaigns, goals, and achievements into effective messages to current and prospective donors.
  • Develop professional and compelling fundraising materials.
  • Oversee and contribute to drafting the annual report and reports to foundations and large donors.
  • Draft and design donor and supporter communications using Constant Contact or other mass email software.
  • Design simple communications, donor materials, and advertisements, and oversee contract designer on more complex projects.
  • Use DonorPerfect to track, manage, and analyze donor relationships and inform future efforts.

Communications and Outreach (~25%)

  • Work with executive director, advocacy director, and contract designer to develop and maintain high-impact website with meaningful content that will effectively engage prospective and current donors and supporters.
  • Collaborate with executive director and advocacy director to develop and implement outreach strategies that effectively communicate the organization's mission and impact and raise public awareness of important issues.
  • Oversee and contribute to communications to supporters and general public, social media content, and radio and web-based advertising.
  • Expand contact list and social media following.
  • Track and monitor communication metrics including engagement, event attendance, media impressions, open and click rates, and social media following.
  • Manage and advise on advertising buys, placements, and content.
  • Organize and oversee volunteers working on outreach activities.
  • Table at community and college events.
  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for executive director and advocacy director to speak to generate awareness and support.
  • Provide feedback to improve press releases and materials for advocacy campaigns.
Educational Background: 
The experience, expertise, and vision to create a comprehensive development plan to ensure our long-term financial stability and finance our current operations and future growth.
Proven track record of successful fundraising and development.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in the animal advocacy and nonprofit fields.
College degree or higher.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge and experience necessary to implement a variety of fundraising and outreach strategies, including running fundraising campaigns; cultivating and communicating with individual, corporate, and foundation donors; curating planned giving; planning fundraising events; researching grant opportunities and writing grant applications; and expanding outreach through social media and paid advertising.
  • Dedication to helping us create a better future for Washington’s fish and wildlife, including both individual animals and species as a whole.
  • A high degree of motivation, energy, and confidence.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Exceptional strategic ability with strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad range of people.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write compelling donor communications, grant applications, and social media messages.
  • Broad experience with nonprofit communications and media strategy.
  • Confidence and expertise necessary to develop a fundraising program as a one-member development team and to implement a variety of fundraising and outreach strategies.
  • Comfort with working quickly, both independently and as part of a small team, while maintaining organization, responsiveness, and attention to detail.
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining systems to track development, communications and member involvement.
  • Commitment to accuracy and abhorrence of typos.
  • Comfort with DonorPerfect or similar CRM platforms, grant management software, computer applications, email marketing software, basic graphic design tools, and a variety of social media platforms. Ability to use WordPress to help manage website a plus.
  • The confidence to take on a variety of challenges, the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances, and the willingness to take in new information and learn new skills.
Compensation/Benefits: 

The salary for this position is $70-$85,000, commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications, with the opportunity for bonuses. Washington Wildlife First also offers health insurance reimbursement, flexible paid time off, and home office equipment subsidies.
