The Development and Communications Manager position will be responsible for providing fundraising leadership and strategic direction to ensure Fund Texas Choice’s stability and continued growth.  The Development and Communications Manager will be responsible for leading individual donor & major gift fundraising and communication initiatives.

The Development and Communications Manager is a new position that oversees the fundraising operations, content development, and marketing of the organization to ensure that all fundraising support systems and processes are optimized, and all areas of fundraising (Institutional and Individual Giving), marketing, and communications have the resources and support they need.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Leadership of Development Operations (approximately 70% of the position)

  • Develop and lead Fund Texas Choice’s individual and institutional donor development strategy, with support and direction of FTC’s Executive Director (ED) and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

  • Ensure CRM fundraising platforms and systems are optimized and functioning properly.

  • Evaluate processes and recommend improvements as needed to streamline efficiency and ensure accuracy.

  • Refine and oversee the process of issuing gift acknowledgements as well as timely processing of income, gift receipt communications, and other centralized donor stewardship operations for the individual donor program.

  • Research and develop engagement automation plans in the CRM, finding ways to systematize tasks and processes the individual and institutional giving team regularly engage in to secure or steward a gift and grant.

  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure accurate financial tracking and compliance systems are in place.

  • Develop fundraising communication strategies and mentor in the board of directors in fundraising efforts.

  • Cultivate and steward individual donors by building and maintaining relationships with current and potential donors.

  • Develop a diverse network of major donors (in Texas and nationally).

  • Develop, nurture and grow relationships with current and prospective donors including individuals, foundations, and other nonprofits through direct personal contact and other means of communication. 

  • Create and implement fundraising campaigns via various channels & platforms (mailings, email, social media, etc.).     

  • Recruit sponsors, participants, and volunteers for fundraising events.      

  • Supervise part-time administrative staff  

  • Plan, coordinate, and attend Fund Texas Choice supporting events with the ED such as in-person events (when safe to resume) and virtual events, including film screenings, conference presentations, house parties, panels and educational opportunities, and other outreach events.

  • Develop donor acknowledgement to ensure all gifts and donations are appropriately recognized. 

  • Accurately oversee and maintain a CRM system to effectively manage contact information for existing and potential donors.   

  • Provide monthly fundraising reports to the ED, COO, and Board of Directors.   

  • Display deep understanding of fundraising best practices and make recommendations to the Board about implementing new or updated fundraising strategies. 

  • Create and carry out community awareness and solidarity campaigns and strategies via multiple channels (in person, mailings, email, social media, etc.).

 Public Relations, Community Engagement, Marketing & Other (approximately 20% of the position)

  • Build and sustain working relationships and communication with FTC partners, including National Network of Abortion Funds, local abortion funds, clinics, volunteers, etc.

  • Oversee and direct all media relations, social media communication, media production, and general public outreach.  

  • Develop and update marketing materials to support gift cultivation, including website, email marketing templates, program pamphlets, and thank you cards, etc.  

  • Develop and update social media content on all preferred social media platforms. 

  • Develop and maintain media contacts to ensure accurate coverage of FTC in media.

  • Actively participate in required convenings, summits, retreats, and staff meetings, and participate in required virtual staff communications.

  • Protect the organization by keeping information confidential.

  • Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by FTC, maintaining networks, and participating in professional organizations as relevant to your role.

  • Perform duties required of all staff to support smooth internal operations such as submitting timely expense reports, reimbursement requests, and timesheets. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Management (approximately 10% of the position)

  • Manage staff responsible for development operations tasks execution.

  • Supervise assigned staff: Write position descriptions and (when necessary) hire assigned staff. 

  • Conduct supervision and evaluations and foster a relationship of mutual feedback.

  • Provide ongoing mentoring to facilitate strategic growth for assigned staff and

  • monitor individual work plans.

  • Conduct necessary performance improvement plans, terminations, and other personnel actions in accordance with personnel policies.


Job experience requirements

  • Five or more years relevant experience in fundraising with a track record in donor stewardship, cultivation of individual and institutional donors and direct ask solicitations.

  • Significant experience working with one or more CRMs, preferably in a nonprofit setting.

  • One or more years of supervisory experience.

  • Prior success managing the entire fundraising process, including donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, and other best practices in the field of donor relations.

  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including

  • public speaking.

Specific skill sets

  • High level of attention to detail.

  • Demonstrates sound project management skills, including the ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple projects to meet required deadlines.

  • Creative thinker and solution finder, particularly in helping solve logistical problems.

  • Experience with online CRM systems.

  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices and fundraising data management.

Preferred skill sets

  • Understanding of the media landscape, including comfort with developing press releases, public service announcements and other written communication with the media and public.

  • Experience with serving as an organizational spokesperson.   

  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience

  • with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Experience working and supervising in remote work environments.

  • Creativity in exciting communities in virtual organizational

  • storytelling and engagement experiences.

  • Experience developing programs, policies, and procedures from

  • inception through delivery.

  • Desire to build mutually supportive social justice movement

  • partnerships, especially in virtual spaces.

  • Strong conversational and written Spanish bilingual proficiency


Status: The position is full-time, exempt, salaried. Salary range: $70,000 - 78,000 commensurate with experience

Additional Information: 

Travel Expectations

Ability to travel as the job requires, approximately two times minimum per month. Travel will primarily be overnight, for approximately 2-5 days, and may be anywhere within the state and sometimes national. Regardless of where an employee lives, and barring travel delays outside of an individual’s control, employees must be able to arrive at their destination on-time.

  • Virtual, remote office. Must be able to participate in online virtual communications including email, video conferencing, and other online tools used to facilitate virtual office culture and work sharing.

  • This position is full time, with the employee’s regular full-time schedule to be approved by supervisor. Regular hours must include attendance during core business hours from 11:00am – 5:00pm Central Time, Monday through Thursday. Occasional work on evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Must be able to conduct business in English; however, fluency in languages other than English is a plus.  

  • Smoke- and drug (illegal or recreational)-free environment.

  • Some work at off-site locations may be required; FTC aims for accessibility in any off-site location that we have control of, but some of them may not be fully accessible.   

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and scanners. Employees are regularly required to communicate effectively via computer, via phone, and in person.

  • This role requires frequent sitting.
