Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Services YMCA, the Director for Philanthropy is responsible for the strategic and tactical planning for the Armed Services YMCA’s financial development; supervision of philanthropy staff, development and execution of annual giving plans, donor relations planning, and evaluation the success of the programs. The Director will actively engage the Board of Directors, and position the Armed Services YMCA as a “charity of choice” for the investment of corporate, organization, and foundation donations across the country.
Works with the Executive Leadership Team to ensure policy, training, systems usage, success measures, and reporting requirements are met. Leverage work to support branch efforts, by coordinating campaigns, training, and sharing resources. Works in concert with Marketing and Communications.
- Lead and be responsible for all aspects of corporate, organization, and foundation donor research, cultivation and stewardship to increase retention and support, including donor recognition.
- Research, write, prepare, coordinate and submit all grant proposals and reports.
- Develop processes and be actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects.
- Communicate with donors and potential donors and other stakeholders to gain support.
- Track donor communications in the donor database and conduct regular clean-up of donor, grants, and contacts to assist in accuracy of records.
- Participate in the maintenance of a donor database.
- Create and implement major giving and planned giving programs.
- Train staff and Board on donor cultivation and stewardship.
- Actively participate in strategic planning, goal development, and assessment of fundraising strategies.
- Work together with the Chief of Staff to create the Philanthropy Directorate’s budget, SOP’s, specific outcomes, and evaluate framework to assess the strengths of initiatives and identify areas for improvement.
- Work collaboratively with all internal functional areas, and with external military and civilian organizations, to provide fundraising support to high quality programs/events which benefit the organization
- Support and enable Armed Services YMCA Headquarters and branch operations to accomplish its mission, strategic plan, goals and objectives.
- Supervise all Philanthropy Department staff
- Develop systems and manage resources needed to carry out the fundraising plans.
- Establish and monitor the financial development department budget.
- Develop the appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the Armed Services YMCA to including guidance and support to all branches.
- Oversee the tracking of all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides monthly income generation reports and other reports as directed.
- Develops donor-focused communication plans to ensure members, participants, and the comprehensive donor community across the country understand the case for support.
- Works with the President & CEO on the coordination of national board meetings, Executive Director meetings, annual reports, newsletters, brochures and other periodic reports.
- Serves as the ASYMCA representative to the Financial Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Represents the Armed Services YMCA as required by the President/CEO.
- Provide support to special events and other fundraising activities as needed.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of program and organizational information.
- Other duties as assigned by the Armed Services YMCA President/CEO.
- Four years of related experience, including knowledge of long range planning process, annual giving, foundation/corporate solicitations, sales, management, communications and special events is preferred.
- General knowledge of nonprofit organizational practices.
- Experience with organizational budgeting and financial development.
- Excellent verbal, written, and public speaking skills.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills. Ability to meet and relate with people with ease.
- Strong organizational skills; well disciplined; able to prioritize, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
- Must be accurate and detail oriented, possess strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a complex and fast paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and as well as in a team environment.
- Proven track record of effective fundraising accomplishments.
- Able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends.
- Able to travel, 20% of time.
- Must successfully pass a background check.
