Habitat for Humanity International is pursuing a highly motivated intern to support our U.S. policy and advocacy work by conducting communication, research, mobilization and analysis on local, state and federal legislative issues related to affordable housing and homeownership.

What will you build?
As a U.S. Government Relations Intern, you will have the opportunity to help Habitat affiliates across the nation build their capacity to engage in advocacy and policy change. You will work on a wide array of projects related to Habitat’s domestic policy work, possibly including covering coalition meetings, communicating with legislative offices, covering hearings on Capitol Hill, working with Habitat affiliates to help them engage in advocacy, tracking legislation, researching policy issues, and supporting Habitat affiliates on unique local housing issues. You will gain hands-on experience researching and analyzing legislation at all levels of government, and creating advocacy tools to support housing policy solutions.

*This position is based at our Government Relations and Advocacy office located in Washington, D.C.
*This position is 3-5 days/week, unpaid internship from January – May, 2018.

Primary Responsibilities:
· Track and analyze trends in housing policy
· Produce tools and resources to support policy priorities and build advocacy knowledge among Habitat affiliates
· Provide support for Habitat’s annual legislative conference, Habitat on the Hill.
· Provide technical assistance to Habitat affiliates on advocacy issues
· Represent Habitat for Humanity at coalition meetings and policy events
· Engage legislative offices about Habitat’s policy priorities

Minimum Qualifications:
· Current Undergraduate or Graduate student
· Exceptionally strong communications skills; must be able to easily communicate with Habitat affiliates across the country
· Strong writing and interpersonal skills
· Willingness to take on individual projects as well as work in a team
· Comfort with research and analysis
· Great organizational skills and the ability to juggle varied tasks while meeting deadlines
· Consistent attention to detail
· Microsoft Office savvy

Preferred Qualifications:
· Advocacy or policy experience
· Nonprofit experience
· Enthusiasm for social justice
· Interest in affordable housing issues
