Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), Save the Children’s political advocacy arm, is looking for a summer intern to support our Early Childhood Education (ECE) and international campaigns by providing research and special project support to our mobilization, communications, government relations and resource development teams.
Founded in 2014, SCAN is building bipartisan will and voter support to make sure every child in the U.S. has access to high-quality early learning and that children and families in conflict-affected areas are protected from harm. We work at the federal level, as well as in our target states of CO, IA, IL, NH, NM, RI, SC, TN, VT and WA, to support policies and programs that benefit kids.
The intern will work with each department within SCAN to better understand how each team contributes to our overall goal of moving the needle on issues affecting children. As a political advocacy organization, SCAN's work is dependent on the political environment and must remain flexible to respond quickly to new developments. The intern will gain experience in public policy, campaign communications, fundraising, grassroots mobilization and more! Specific responsibilities may include:
Government Relations:
- Supporting federal, state and local government relations efforts by researching elected officials and legislation that support our policy priorities
- Supporting coalition work through specific research, targeting and coordination projects
- Attending and assisting with congressional breifings, coalition events and more as needed
Communications:
- Assisting in maintaining media lists for targeted districts
- Monitoring social media for trends and conversations on our signature issues
- Researching media for articles relating to our signature issues
- Writing and editing for the organization’s blog, The Voice for Kids
- Assisting in website management using WordPress
- Assisting in shooting and editing videos and photos, as needed
Resource Development:
- Conducting donor and prospect research
- Drafting donor communications, including fact sheets and acknowledgements
Mobilization:
- Supporting state mobilization efforts through event planning, campus outreach and grassroots research to identify opportunities for volunteers to engage with members of Congress over the summer recess.
- Providing data support for online engagement plans
- Assisting with general administrative tasks and projects
- Assisting with the coordination of our Student Ambassador and Volunteer Leader Programs
- Interest in early childhood education in the U.S. and/or global issues affecting children
- Ability to excel in a flexible, fast-paced environment
- Experience with political campaigns and/or grassroots organizing a plus
- Strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- To be classified as an intern: (Minimum requirement is a letter of support and documentation is required only after an internship is offered.)
- Any individual who is not a student or able to receive credit may apply for an internship, but will be classified as a skilled volunteer, not as an intern.
- Structured learning and development program
- Meaningful work under the direct supervision of an experienced Save the Children staff member
- Highly collaborative and innovative teams
- Networking program with managers across the organization
- Flexible schedule
- A family friendly work environment
- The knowledge that the work you are supporting is changing the lives of children all around the world
