The Summer Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) Fellow will split his/her time between providing technical support and input to the MERL work of the Department of Global Health (DGH) and providing organizational and coordination support to DGH’s MERL Technical Team. Examples of tasks include providing support for routine reporting, data analysis, documentation, and data visualization work; supporting the development and implementation of country offices’ MEL tools and plans; conducting desk and literature reviews; and supporting the design, implementation, and analysis for research and evaluation activities.

As a Fellow, you will have the opportunity to network with other Save the Children interns, volunteers and employees and participate in learning sessions about various topics spanning the breadth of Save the Children's work. Through this experience, you will gain a greater understanding about how the international development community intersects with the private sector. You will also gain transferable skills that are applicable to a variety of roles, particularly in the non-profit industry, marketing, sales, and client services.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Department of Global Health MERL Program Support:

  • Providing support for routine data reporting, data analysis (qualitative and quantitative), documentation, and data visualization work
  • Providing support for the development and implementation of country program M&E tools and plans
  • Conducting desk and literature reviews for reports or manuscripts
  • Providing technical support to the design, implementation, data analysis for research and evaluation activities

MERL Technical Team Support:

  • Coordinate and provide support to DGH MERL meetings
  • Liaise with DGH MERL staff to identify key MERL-related tools, resources, and other documents and coordinate their housing on the SaveNet SharePoint site
  • Provide, as needed, general administrative and organizational support to DGH MERL staff.
Educational Background: 
An individual must be enrolled in a relevant graduate or post-graduate academic program and able to receive some level of credit from his/her college or institution. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Master’s degree in process or completed (public health, epidemiology, demography) and significant experience in public health and nutrition research/program monitoring and evaluation
  • Interest in USAID standards and guidelines
  • Experience with key international organizations working in maternal, newborn, and child health
  • Strong background in monitoring and evaluation, preferably in health and/or nutrition programs implemented in developing country settings.
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative data skills, including but not limited to survey and focus group instrument design and use, data analysis and presentation, and development and communication of results.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member with a diversity of headquarters, field office, and partner agency staff.
  • Excellent English writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literacy in word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, database, and analytical software packages (e.g. SPSS, STATA).
  • Demonstrated organization and task completion skills; ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and in a timely and comprehensive manner.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Motivated, committed to Save the Children’s mission and willingness to learn.
  • Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • To be classified as fellow: (Minimum requirement is a letter of support and documentation is required only after a fellowship offer is accepted.)
  • An individual who is not enrolled as a student or able to receive credit from their institution may apply to a fellowship, however will be classified as a skilled volunteer, not as a fellow.
