Children in every country, every culture, at every social and economic level are at risk of harm including physical and emotional abuse, sexual violence, exploitation, and neglect. By 2030 Save the Children is committed to ensuring that violence against children is no longer tolerated and that the most vulnerable children around the world are protected. The Child Protection team is looking for a spring 2020 fellow to support our technical leadership, new business development, and data-informed communications. The fellow will be based in our DC office.

Candidate will support new business development, external communication, and capacity building for the Child Protection team. The fellow will help improve access to, and understanding of, the most up to date evidence and best practices that will enable the team to design the most effective programs for children and families. The fellow will be a key contributor to championing child protection work with colleagues, donors, and other stakeholders. The geographic focus is likely to be Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, but this is subject to change based on opportunities that arise in the spring. There will be ample brown bags, collaborations, and learning circles for the fellow to network and become familiar with the work being done across Save the Children’s programs in Health, Education, Livelihoods, and Humanitarian Response.

Learning Objectives

The Child Protection fellow will:

  • Gain experience for how to use theory, policy, and evidence to support the design of effective programming
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the intersection of child protection and gender inequality
  • Become familiar with how a large international NGO manages new business development process

Responsibilities

The Child Protection fellow’s responsibilities are designed to build on each other and link theoretical with on the ground programming reality. The fellow will work closely with all technical members of the Child Protection team and report directly to the Director of Child Protection to carry out the following activities:

  • Develop annotated bibliographies on selected technical topics (possible topics include: early childhood development for HIV-exposed children, psychosocial interventions, and using technology for gender norms change)
  • Conduct analysis for program recommendations based on annotated bibliographies
  • Write country profiles that can be used for new business development
  • Collaborate with field teams to create data dashboards or other communication briefers that showcase program achievements and results for children
  • Contribute to the analysis of gender norms change pilot project data and lessons learned
  • Support child protection team as requested with new business development tasks
  • Other activities may be identified based on the strengths and interests of the fellow
Educational Background: 
Currently enrolled graduate student in Social Work, Public Health, International Affairs, Gender Studies, or other relevant discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience and/ or interest in child protection or gender-based violence
  • Demonstrable experience in research and analysis of complex social issues
  • Strong oral and written communications skills (English is required, Spanish or French is desirable)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work across a variety of cultures and also with remote team members
  • Ability to lead on tasks independently with keen attention to detail
  • Not afraid to be curious, ask questions, learn, and fail
  • Must be proficient in MS Office suite; experience in MS Teams application is desirable
  • Must be eligible to intern or volunteer in the U.S.
