The primary purpose of the position of Senior School Health and Nutrition (SHN) Specialist is to provide technical assistance to SHN programs globally to ensure quality programming and to promote Save the Children’s strategic plan. The Sr. SHN Specialist contributes to the global leadership by assisting in strategic and operational plans for SHN in country offices and at home offices and by representing SC at international forums. The Senior Specialist leads in developing tools and frameworks to promote quality SHN programming, capacity building of program managers, and improved approaches globally.
Technical Leadership and Quality Programming—60%
- Provide technical guidance to country programs on heath topics affecting school age children including, but not limited to, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, and malaria, to ensure quality SHN programming that will increase the number of children who are healthier and attend school more regularly.
- Provide regular in-person or remote technical assistance to specific countries in formulating and monitoring contextually relevant program designs and strategies for SHN.
- Review and provide feedback to program inputs, outputs and processes, including logical and result frameworks, implementation work plans, assessments and research designs, health training manuals, program manuals and education materials, as needed.
- Build country staff capacity through trainings on program management, SHN technical areas, and in the use of M&E tools and systems.
- Assist in the adaptation of tools, manuals, technical guidance and other evidence-based school health resources to new contexts and programs.
Program Learning and Innovation—20%
- Contribute to the compilation, learning and dissemination of information/data collected through country M&E plans via, analysis, report writing and socialization of reports.
- Identify evidence gaps and priorities for research and documentation.
- Collaborate with SHN team members to develop SHN frameworks to be used in Save the Children’s global programs.
- Provide additional information and documentation related to SHN program activities as needed.
- Identify points of synergy and efficiency that can be leveraged between thematic program areas (education, child protection, etc) in programming and operations.
- Assist in the design, analysis and documentation of operational research projects.
Public and Private Resource Mobilization—10%
- Write proposals to US government, corporate, foundation, and individual donors
- Work closely with colleagues to manage critical donor relationships and develop donor funding strategies
- Liaise with donors and program staff to ensure quality reporting and donor satisfaction
- Network and maintain communications with potential donors and partners
Global Program Strategy and Market Positioning—10%
- Play a key role in departmental and divisional strategic and operational planning processes to achieve SHN program goals
- Contribute to strategic and operational planning at country level and global level
- Identify priorities within SHN and develop plans for achieving SHN results at global level
- Represent Save the children in international fora and identify strategic opportunities for SHN
- Collaborate with global partners to ensure development of new evidence and state of the art approaches for SHN
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in SHN, or related programs, in developing countries required
- Experience providing technical advice and guidance on designing, implementing and monitoring and evaluation to various size programs, grants or projects
- Ability to travel internationally, approximately, 25-50% of the time
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or its equivalent in Public Health, nutrition or related field
- Experience working with school-based health programs, especially school meals.
- Demonstrated experience providing technical assistance or programmatic guidance.
- Experience in writing successful proposals to US Government funders and private donors.
- Familiarity with and commitment to addressing gender equality in programming.
- Qualitative and quantitative program monitoring and evaluation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated capacity to be a team player and to work independently when needed.
- Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and deliverables across a portfolio of projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively cross-culturally
