Senior Director, Public Affairs & Development

In concert with the AVP, Public Affairs & Development, the Senior Director, Public Affairs & Development will drive fundraising efforts for Save the Children’s U.S. Programs & Advocacy (USPA) division, which includes Save the Children’s advocacy arm, Save the Children Action Network (SCAN). S/he will lead on strategy implementation and internal alignment to substantially increase and diversify the division’s private and public funding portfolio and will identify new public-private partnership opportunities. The Senior Director’s primary focus will be to ensure that the Public Affairs & Development department’s work is fully integrated with other departments within the division and across the larger agency. S/he will play a key leadership role in quality impact and growth.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Revenue Generation – Private (40%)

  • Oversee private fundraising efforts for USPA.
    • Work with agency and division Resource Development staff to develop robust and viable pipeline for both programs and advocacy campaigns.
    • Oversee execution plans to meet or exceed annual targets.
    • In collaboration with Chief of Staff, develop and implement annual stewardship plans. This may include site visits, briefings and other special events designed to build support for Save the Children’s programs and advocacy campaigns.
    • In coordination with USPA’s Director of Resource Development and Chief of Staff, ensure aligned, integrated and strategic partnership with the agency’s Resource Development division.

Revenue Generation – Public (40%)

  • Oversee, increase and diversify USPA’s public funding portfolio.
    • Develop annual targets for local, state and federal funding that focus on competitive grants and other public funding streams, such as 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Head Start, USDA, Migrant Education and CDBG at the federal level, as well as state and local programs such as ASES and First 5 in California.
    • Lead USPA grant writing team to develop annual plans and provide direction on prospecting, research, writing and grant submission.
    • Ensure strong coordination with finance, field and program staff and other teams to complete high-quality, competitive grant applications.
    • Develop and implement annual stewardship plans, working in close partnership with Chief of Staff and SCAN’s government relations, mobilization and communications teams. This may include site visits, briefings and other special events designed to build support for Save the Children’s programs.

Management (20%)

  • Align private and public teams to work in unison, capitalize on opportunities and maximize synergies.
  • Provide innovative leadership and direction resulting in improved management of staff and processes to generate workflow optimization.
  • Provide leadership in analytics, including forecasting and pacing and in goal setting processes for the department.
  • Directly supervise a team of six (6), including three director-level positions, and provide subject-matter expertise, guidance and mentoring to other departmental staff and, as appropriate, to local, state and federal consultants.
    • Support implementation of effective staff management and development plans for entire department.
    • Build positive team morale and support staff to become effective and knowledgeable of how their work links to wider agency directions, strategies and policies.
  • Along with AVP, lead team meetings and retreats, contributing to the overall strategy and direction of the division.
  • Ensure strong coordination and collaboration between the Public Affairs & Development department and other departments in the division, as well as across the agency.

Ensure compliance to agency standards, policies and procedures for all activities.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in public and private revenue generation at the state and federal level
  • Proven ability to create and maintain effective internal and external alliances and partnerships
  • Strong interpersonal and representational skills, with demonstrated ability to advocate and persuade
  • Experience building, motivating, coaching and mentoring staff and teams and providing guidance and direction while achieving high quality results
  • Extensive experience in facilitating cross-functional brainstorm and strategy development teams
  • Demonstrated ability to generate new ideas and innovative projects with positive attitude and optimism that ambitious goals can be met
  • Proven ability to translate innovative strategies and new ideas into cross-team, cross-functional projects with specific KPIs aligned with team and agency goals
  • Ability to work under pressure on a number of competing issues, yet remain flexible to change
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to travel up to 35%
