Save the Children’s U.S. Programs and Advocacy (USPA) division partners with low-income, rural communities across the nation to give children living in these underserved areas a healthy start, the best possible opportunity to learn and protection from harm. USPA currently has a four-person team dedicated to raising public funds for Save the Children’s domestic work through competitive grants and public budget allocations.
USPA is seeking a full-time, highly-motivated Senior Coordinator for Public Affairs and Development. This position is based in Washington D.C. and will report to the Associate Vice President of Public Affairs and Development. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in furthering their skills and experience in nonprofit development and government relations.
- Support the division’s strategy around competitive grants (55%)
- Research, identify and qualify funding opportunities from local, state and federal government sources.
- Provide assistance with government grant application materials.
- Assist in gathering and analyzing information for specific community needs assessments, including designing and analyzing stakeholder surveys.
- Research and summarize data and information from various sources for use in proposal narratives.
- Provide writing support on proposals, including developing or updating language as needed.
- Support the division’s strategy around public budget allocations (20%)
- Write, manage and update presentations, proposals, fact sheets and reports for state and local governments and ensure timely completion.
- Monitor and analyze state budgets and policy news.
- Research, identify and qualify funding opportunities from government sources.
- Compile memos in preparation for meetings and events.
- Coordinate activities across the USPA division (5%)
- Compile data and information for regular updates to USPA leadership.
- Maintain close working relationships with advocacy, program and private resource development staff to project-manage initiatives (e.g. fundraising events).
- Represent team on cross-functional working groups as appropriate.
- Support the AVP of Public Affairs and Development. (20%)
- Ensure the AVP is prepared for meetings and events; coordinate and develop briefings and other materials.
- Prepare travel arrangements and expense reports for the AVP.
- Assist in tracking correspondence with donors/prospects, policymakers and partners.
- Provide other administrative support as needed.
- You have a minimum 3-4 years' experience in area of expertise
- Strong technology skills (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Ability to work productively and proactively, both independently and within a cross-functional team environment

Preferred Qualifications
- Fundraising/grant writing background
- Proficiency with CRM systems (Blackbaud/BBEC experience is a strong plus)
