PSI’s seeks a dynamic, results-oriented, business-minded, technical sanitation consultant to support the global WASH team in documenting and codifying the existing product systems (toilets, slab, SATO Pan, septic tanks, soak away pits, etc.) from both a technical, cost, and business perspective. The position will require fluency in English and French and will report to the Senior Technical Advisor for WASH.
Areas of Responsibility:
Using their expertise and knowledge of engineering, business, and local construction in varying contexts, the consultant will:
- Carry out an inventory of all sanitation product systems being used by PSI and its business partners in seven countries.
- Produce a full and detailed description, costing and costing analysis of the product systems in local currency and USD. These costing report will include a full itemized bill of quantities and a list of input materials, labor, parts, production costs, fees, etc. It will also include a description of the input materials and variations or differences in quality and its impact on the quality and costing. For example, evidentially cement in Ethiopia is of lower quality than cement in India so takes longer to cure. Sand and gravel pack differences in quality make concrete ring production different in Senegal than in Cambodia. The costing report should be provided in both a Word and Excel format.
- Provide a business analysis report of the existing product systems that includes description of the business models associated with the product systems and potentials for improvements and cost reductions.
- Provide a technical analysis report of the existing product systems that includes why there are differences between product systems and make recommendations if / how they might be streamlined to improve cost and efficiencies.
- Produce visuals of the product systems that can be used in communications and marketing materials and for promoting the product systems to WASH sector players, NGOs, UNICEF, World Bank, etc.
- Provide a complete set of technical drawings (in English and French) for all product systems so that a local entrepreneur, building contractor, or mason could look at the drawings and replicate the product systems.
- Write an abstract (which PSI will submit to a future conference) and a 2-3 page story (with photos and visuals) for publication by PSI describing the key learnings from the consultancy.
ACTIVITIES
- Obtain and review all existing technical and costing documents on the product systems
- Remotely interview the project teams (PSI and its partners) in India, Ethiopia, Mali, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire, Benin, and Ghana to clarify information about the product system, input materials, costs, business aspects, and production processes.
- Draft costing, business, and technical reports on the product systems and share with PSI WASH technical team for review.
- Develop technical drawings/visuals.
- Revise reports based on inputs from PSI WASH technical team.
- Write draft learning story and abstract and submit to PSI WASH technical team for review.
- Revise learning story and abstract and finalize.
Educational Background:
Masters Engineering Degree or relevant experience and a background in water and sanitation.
Skills/Experience:
- Previous familiarity with sanitation product systems, construction, costing and business models, preferably Asia and Africa.
- Strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong technical understanding of WASH sector and best practices and approaches to sustainable programming, especially market development and business.
- Experience producing itemized bill of quantities and related technical materials
- Familiarity with the business side of WASH and understanding of the links between product systems and successful business models.
- At least eight years of expertise working on WASH in developing countries.
- Special attention to detail and timeliness.
- Professional proficiency in French and English.
