The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Media Advocacy Manager position in our national Marketing and Communications Department based in the American Heart Association’s advocacy office in Washington, DC.
Under the supervision of the Vice President of Media Advocacy, and in collaboration with federal, state and community advocacy staff, this position is responsible for developing and implementing media advocacy strategies and tactics in support of the American Heart Association’s advocacy priorities.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Track, distribute and report daily media coverage of the Association’s advocacy agenda; manage and build media lists of policy and politics reporters; manage the distribution of media releases through the Association’s media monitoring and distribution service (Meltwater); assume primary responsibility for posting media materials in the Association’s online newsroom.
- Advance the Association’s advocacy presence on Twitter and other social media platforms; monitor and report on social media engagement and metrics; work closely with grassroots staff to leverage existing social media channels and identify new and creative ways to engage supporters and others via digital communications;lead the digital advocacy efforts for American Heart Association coalitions on access to care and other priority issues.
- Contribute to the writing and review of advocacy-related content for the Association’s main website (heart.org), including the homepage, the Around the American Heart Association section and advocacy-focused pages throughout the site; help set the strategic direction of internal communications to advocacy staff as well as advocacy-related communications to non-advocacy staff; act as editor of advocacy’s internal newsletter.
- Provide media advocacy support for media events, report releases, grassroots lobby days and other special events.
Specific duties:
- Develop and implement social media promotion strategies in support of the Association’s federal, state and community advocacy agenda, including the development of messages, updating social media sites, monitoring engagement with the Association’s advocacy Twitter handle (@AmHeartAdvocacy), supporting basic graphic design and video editing, and analyzing metrics.
- Assist with writing blog posts, social media posts, Web copy and materials, fact sheets on advocacy issues and other materials as assigned.
- Serve as writer for coverage of advocacy issues on the Association’s home page in collaboration with advocacy staff and content teams.
- Serve as editor for the Association’s advocacy newsletter; work with advocacy staff to determine and develop content; maintain readership list and distribute final product.
- Assist with developing materials to support media advocacy campaigns and strategies led by field staff at the state and local levels.
- Responsible for content management of media advocacy webpages and other advocacy webpages as assigned; create content, update posted materials and publish Web content.
- Monitor, track and analyze daily media coverage of advocacy issues; collect and distribute daily media clips; monitor reporter coverage; maintain and build issue-specific media lists; distribute advocacy press releases; collect analytics.
- Assist with planning and logistics for press events, volunteer congressional visits, congressional briefings and special Capitol Hill events, as needed.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.
Skills/Experience:
- 2-4 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, politics and/or media/journalism.
- Deep knowledge of social and online media.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Experience with Web content management systems.
- Ability to work in team environment under deadline pressure.
- Ability to travel up to 10% with overnight stay.
Preferred experience:
- Knowledge of health policy issues.
- Familiarity with the federal and state legislative process.
