NPR seeks to hire a dynamic, experienced, and mission-driven Manager of Planned Giving to join NPR’s development team at NPR headquarters in Washington, DC. Reporting to and partnering closely with the Executive Director of Planned Giving, the Manager will be responsible for the overall administration of estate gift expectancies to NPR and inquiry of new planned gift intentions, utilizing planned giving best practices in order to help NPR achieve short and long-term fundraising goals and build a strong culture of philanthropy for public radio. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation of planned giving knowledge and best practices, with a track record of fostering successful relationships with external and internal constituents. They will be a hard-worker who is motivated by the NPR mission to achieve significant fundraising goals and thrive in a fast-paced, creative, results-oriented culture.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conduct initial review and analysis of legal documentation received to administer current planned gift expectancies through wills, trusts and other deferred giving instruments in which NPR is a named beneficiary
  • Maintain proactive and appropriate communication with fiduciaries and attorneys concerning estate settlement status to help secure the maximum, most cost-effective distributions
  • Using donor management database, create a tickler system to proactively manage all open estates and record correspondence to maintain up to date records
  • Make personal contact with donors and prospects by phone, mail, and email; arrange for and support personal contacts by the Executive Director or others as necessary
  • Track individual donor activities; maintain and update donors’ gift records in the database; maintain donors’ electronic and paper files
  • Work with Donor Research as necessary to help identify donors and prospects in order to prioritize solicitation and stewardship activities
  • Partner with the Donor Stewardship team to help build and sustain a meaningful legacy society  
  • Work in partnership with the Executive Director on strategy and implementation of collaborative planned giving initiatives with member stations
  • Work with the Executive Director to help create a network of financial advisors and estate planning attorneys who desire to support the mission of NPR through their practice
  • Partner with the Development Writing Hub to create donor proposals, stewardship touches, and other donor materials as required
  • Maintain and update donor information promptly in the donor database to ensure accuracy
  • Exemplify fundraising best practices and a high-level of ethics in all activities
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years of experience in planned gift fundraising
  • Experience navigating estate court filings and procedures and in reviewing and understanding inventories, court accountings and financial statements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to work closely and professionally with a wide range of constituents, including staff, board members, Member stations, external partners and donors/prospects
  • Ability to communicate basic planned giving techniques in concept and application
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and strong appetite to work in a developing philanthropic environment with lots of potential
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and to do so in collaboration with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong initiative, self-motivation, and ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • An interest in continuing professional development to build knowledge and skills, and to keep current with changing tax laws and other developments
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, to set and adjust priorities, and work under pressure while maintaining composure and a sense of humor
  • Knowledge and confidence in the areas of estate and trust law is preferred
  • Strong commitment to NPR’s code of ethics, standards, and reputation as a nonpartisan public news organization
  • An understanding of complex fundraising organizations or federated nonprofit models is preferred
