Contribute to the development, planning, and execution of comprehensive media advocacy strategies in support of the advocacy work of the American Cancer Society through its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), with particular emphasis on advertising, social media and the web, and materials design and production.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Manage ACS CAN’s federal advertising efforts and the work of its advertising vendor; contribute to the strategy behind ACS CAN’s federal advertising and coordinate the creation, review, and placement of paid print, online and native content
- Serve as a primary liaison to the Society’s advertising and content integration teams to ensure coordination
- Contribute to the development and execution of ACS CAN’s creative needs and processes, including serving as a liaison to the Society’s Creative Services team within the Development department and assisting with project management for ACS CAN creative services requests as needed
- Lead the development, writing, design, printing, and distribution of ACS CAN’s annual Advocacy Accomplishments reportLead the strategy, writing and promotion of ACS CAN President’s Cancer CANdor blog
- Represent the Media Advocacy Team on the staff workgroup that oversees acscan.org; play a leading role in adding fresh content and resources to the ACS CAN website; and advance ACS CAN’s use of social media channels through strategy development and strategic engagement with partners and other audiences
- Participate in the drafting, copy editing and distribution of press materials, letters to the editor, and other external and internal advocacy communications aimed at the media, policymakers and their staffs, Society and ACS CAN staff and volunteers, and others; conduct media and blog outreach in support of ACS CAN’s advocacy campaigns.
- Monitor online databases and other resources for news stories of interest to ACS CAN staff; maintain hard copy, online, and video clip files; and develop media coverage reports
- Maintain and build databases and mailing lists of media contacts; assist in fielding and responding to media inquiries as assigned
- Assist with building and maintaining ACS CAN intranet communities
- Provide administrative assistance to the Media Advocacy Team, perform special projects as assigned, and serve on internal staff workgroups
Educational Background:
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, political science or related field

- Interest in advertising and/or publication design preferred. Interest in issue advocacy essential.
- Knowledge of politics, Congress, and/or health issues a plus.
SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE:
- Two to four years of professional experience in media/public relations, advertising, creative production, journalism, or related field

- Ability to travel when necessary
