The Group Sales Specialist will execute a comprehensive strategy for the prospecting, soliciting, and booking of groups for the National Geographic Museum and National Geographic Live events in Washington, DC. Responsibilities include creating sales strategies and prospect lists, representing the museum at sales conferences and distribution of museum information to potential groups and tour operators, booking reservations, creating itineraries and greeting groups on the day of their visit, and management of correspondence in accordance with group sales efforts. The Group Sales Specialist will also work closely with the marketing staff to implement groups sales strategies, update the group sales web page, produce revenue and attendance reports, fulfill group sales bookings and identify growth areas.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for all phases of group sales - from sales strategies to orders/contracts, including secure deposits and payments for group ticket sales. Greets groups when they arrive on campus and provides itineraries for large groups. Provides excellent customer service to all groups inquiring about a visit by providing timely responses to phone calls and e-mails. (40%)
  • Creates and manages group sales database to track leads, inquiries, lost business, sales revenue. Provides ongoing status reports. Works closely with the Marketing teams to implement and track group marketing efforts. Attends relevant conferences and maintains periodic communications with groups in the database. (30%)
  • Works with Ticket Operations Manager, Ticketing Systems Administrator, and VP Public experiences to establish a comprehensive group sales strategy, including annual revenue and attendance goals. input and strategy for budget planning purposes. Produces reports tracking and updating budget goals for management. . (20%)
  • Keep accurate records of all groups sales activities,  makes schedules and planning documents that assist visitor services and ticketing staff in fulfillment efforts. (10%)
Educational Background: 
BA or related sales experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2 or more years of relevant experience.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Ideal candidate will have a background in visitor services, group sales, or marketing for a museum, performing arts venue, or related industry. Washington DC experience is a plus.
  • Must be a self starter and be responsive to requests with a focus on customer service and satisfaction. Museum experience is a plus.
  • Ticketing systems and software experience also a benefit.
