Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a committed professional to join our Government Relations and Advocacy team as the Associate Director of Federal Relations. Reporting to the the Director of Federal Relations and working in our Washington, D.C. office, the Federal Relations Associate Director supports Habitat for Humanity's U.S. federal government relations and advocacy efforts to advance public policies that eliminate barriers to adequate, affordable housing. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identify and analyze federal legislation, laws, and regulations affecting affordable housing broadly and the housing production of Habitat affiliated organization
  • Lobby in support of Habitat's federal legislative priorities and build effective relationships with members of Congress, and their staff 
  • Engage with federal agencies around the successful implementation of the federal programs that benefit Habitat, and react to regulatory proposals and changes as needed 
  • Assist and respond to the needs of Habitat affiliated organizations in advocating for and engaging in federal policy issues
  • Coordinate and connect Habitat affiliated organizations with Congressional offices to increase knowledge of affordable housing, and move federal legislation forward 
  • Serve as the liasion with multiple federal policy related coalitions, and lead Habitat's involvement in these coalition advocacy efforts 
  • In strong coordination with the Campaign team, lead Habitat's federal mobilization efforts, including creating online action alerts, toolkits, social media posts, and federal policy related content for network related communications and newsletters
  • Actively support and contribute to the overall network engagement strategy of communications, learning and mobilization 
  • Support the federal policy content and goals of the U.S. Advocacy Campaign, and coordinate with the Campaign team regularly on federal campaign related issues 
  • Build the advocacy capacity of the affiliate network by creating and presenting trainings at state and national conferences, conducting webinars, and organizing local Congressional meetings 
  • Create content for, identify speakers, and support the Capitol Hill day for Habitat's annual legislative conference, Habitat on the Hill
Educational Background: 
Bachelors Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 to 7 years experience in non-profit advocacy, federal government relations or related field
  • Demonstrated federal policy experience in policy analysis, direct lobbying, grassroots mobilization and/or coalition building 
  • Experience working with members of Congress and their staff to develop and advocate for federal legislation 
  • Experience in analyzing or drafting legislation, regulations, and laws
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills 
  • Effective listener
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships
  • Ability to prioritize and complete time-sensitive projects
  • Ability to work in a small-office environment
  • Strong computer/database experience required

PREFERRED:

  • Graduate degree in a related field
  • Experience doing nonprofit government relations and advocacy
  • Experience doing grassroots mobilization 
  • Knowledge of affordable housing and/or community development policy and programs
