The Director, Public Affairs & Development, will manage portfolios of public federal, state and local funders for Save the Children’s U.S. Programs & Advocacy (USPA) division. His or her primary focus will be on generating public resources to support Save the Children’s programs in rural America, including Head Start. This position will be focused on diversifying the division’s existing public funding portfolio and with identifying new opportunities. The position will report to the Associate Vice president, Public Affairs & Development.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Grant Writing 60%

  • Manage the development of strategy, concepts and framework for the submission of competitive proposals to public donors.
  • Determine proposal concept by identifying and clarifying funding opportunities and needs.
  • Develop high quality, winning proposals by leading development process, assembling teams, writing and editing proposal sections, developing budget narratives, and supporting final proposal production for submission to donors.
  • Coordinate with USPA Finance Managers and other finance staff for proposal budgeting.

Relationship Management (30%)

  • Grow a portfolio of prospects and work with them to identify a funding fit.
  • Meet with prospects and donors to grow the business.
  • Manage stewardship of assigned and prospective national, state and local donors.

Coordination with State, Program and Private Fundraising Teams (10%)

  • Create and coordinate with state leads to secure federal, state and local funding.
  • Meet regularly with program teams to understand funding needs and areas of innovation.
  • Coordinate funding opportunities with private fundraising team
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • You have a minimum 7-10 years' experience in grant writing and fundraising at the state and federal level
  • Proven record of winning seven figure grants
  • Demonstrated ability to write technical proposals, including experience in winning 21st Century Community Learning Center grants
  • Previous experience in Head Start grant writing preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure on a number of competing issues, yet remain flexible to change
  • Excellent organizational and management skills
  • Clear understanding of U.S. child poverty and rural poverty issues

  • Advanced degree in Education or related field preferred
