Oversees responsibility and accountability for grant-funded programs and compliance.  Directs a team focused on a complex portfolio (175 grantees totaling $38 million) of work from identification, management, and compliance of external grantees (disaster relief and program grants to achieve strategic plan goals) to multi-million dollar government programs in multiple states and involving multiple partners, including for-profit and non-profit stakeholders. The current portfolio includes 175 grantees totaling $38 million.  Identifies external programs, with potential to scale nationally under the AARP Foundation umbrella.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identifies evidence-based solutions to achieve strategic plan goals.
  • Supports program goals by identifying grantees with proven solutions, especially those with potential to scale.
  • Monitors compliance and oversight of all grantees.
  • Develops and maintains rigorous grant-making and monitoring systems (only those grantees with a proven track record of results get grants and keep grants).
  • Manages the disaster relief grant-making process.
  • Tracks grantee results to the annual dashboard and 3-year strategic plan.
  • Builds external connections and relationships to keep a pulse on the landscape to identify potential grantees and funders in the low income 50+ space.
  • Ensures the establishment and implementation of best-of-class business policies and procedures, monitoring compliance, as well as working with the appropriate department(s) to identify new funding opportunities to grow the government grant portfolio.  Plays a key role in developing and stewarding relationships with external organizations and leaders.
  • Engages in the process of continuous innovation, adaptation, and learning.
  • Understands the senior poverty space to drive strategic differentiation and partnerships.
  • Works successfully in cross-functional teams and engages different units internally and enterprise-wide to drive innovation to achieve the mission.
  • Focuses on building and maintaining a high-performing team.
  • Leads disaster relief grant-making efforts, including coordinating efforts enterprise-wide.
  • Identifies government revenue opportunities and seeks to secure available funding.
  • Implements best-of-class government grant compliance policies and procedures to ensure full compliance for government grants.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Master’s degree in Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum 10 years of experience to include strong leadership skills and judgement in leading and developing a high-performing team..
  • Bachelor's degree coupled with 12 or more years grant management experience will be considered in lieu of Masters degree
  • Experience with large-scale program development and administration, strategic planning, or an equivalent combination of training and professional experience related to the duties of the job. 
  • Experience managing and growing a diverse grants portfolio.
  • Experience with and knowledge of government grant and contracting requirements.
  • Excellent business judgment, a familiarity with a wide variety of business models both in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, and the ability to see the potential application of these models in the context of social innovation.
  • Ability to identify future programmatic trends and opportunities.
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative research and analysis and ability to communicate results to different constituents.
