FHI360’s Global Education, Employment, and Engagement (G3E) Business Unit leads organizational efforts to improve educational outcomes, strengthen citizen engagement and civil society leadership and effectiveness, and to foster growth of inclusive and sustainable economies. G3E is home to one of FHI 360’s two technical business units. The Director, G3E reports directly to the COO, and is a member of the Executive Leadership Forum.
With a portfolio currently spanning 70 countries, from Guatemala to Myanmar, the next G3E Business Unit Director will join FHI360 at both an exciting and pivotal point, and have the opportunity to build on the rich legacy of programs and chart a course for the G3E Business Unit to adapt and respond to new opportunities.
The successful candidate will be a strategic and innovative leader, have deep experience in blending public and private sector expertise and resources to address constraints and opportunities for economic and educational advancement of marginalized communities, a proven track record of building meaningful partnerships with foreign governments, donors and other development stakeholders, and an articulate public speaker. He/she will lead a team of more than 75 experts in civil society, peacebuilding, governance, education and training, social science research, and competitiveness and entrepreneurship, and must exhibit a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
As a senior member of the organization, the Director provides leadership and oversight in the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan. He/she will: collaborate cross- organizationally to design and deliver high quality results that achieve lasting impact for an assigned business area and portfolio of work. Lead business development to sustain and grow the organization and fulfill its mission, including identifying, developing and capturing and expanding new markets. supports the development of strong strategic partnerships and client/government/partner relations. Provide operational oversight and is the lead representative across a given business unit. Ensures accountability for project design and technical quality, customer satisfaction and achievement of planned results. Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and policies. Monitor, manage, and mitigate organizational risk. Organize cross functional and inter-regional activities ensuring efficacy of the project(s)/programmatic objectives. Oversee and evaluate the staffing, budgets, training and other programmatic needs and activities and works with the operations team to ensure a harmonized and efficient enterprise services platform for the business unit and its departments. Participate as a full member of the COO Leadership Group.
- Directs the organization to ensure the attainment of financial and operational goals within the business unit in support of the company’s overall financial and strategic objectives.
- Establishes budgets, short- and long-range objectives and criteria for monitoring progress and measuring success.
- Administers the organization’s policies through subordinate managers and directs and coordinates activities of more than one department.
- Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the division/business unit.
- Provides strategic leadership and oversight for all organizational operations in the assigned Business Unit (Sector or Region).
- Responsible for meeting business development targets and achieving departmental plans.
- Works with Department Directors and other Business Units to develop operational/G&A budgets that support the BU’s organizational goals.
- Manages budgets, staffing plans, revenue forecasting, and tracks financial expenditures.
- Works with groups to identify manage and mitigate organizational risk and ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and policies.
- Develops and/or monitors regional/sectoral landscape analyses, strategic plans, and oversees the approval of proposals, protocols, reports and budgets.
- Establishes, serves and maintains partnerships with internal and external stakeholders working within the assigned portfolio to achieve strategic goals.
- Serves on various committees and teams both internal and external to the organization.
- Works with Enterprise Services to ensure harmonized enterprise services platform for the BU.
- Oversees management of staff, ensuring alignment with strategic and programmatic goals.
- Provides technical leadership in assigned areas, ensures sharing of organizational knowledge and lessons learned, and promotes the use and application of data and evidence.
- Develops and manages BU communication plans, including promoting the organization's brand.
- Facilitates effective and efficient project start-up and close-out for assigned projects and portfolios.
- Provides leadership in emergency situations for assigned staff, as required/requested.
- Provides a strong enterprise services platform for all assigned projects.
- Supports performance management and professional development of direct reports, including ongoing feedback, coaching, and career support.
Supervision Given/Received:
- Sets goals and budgets for projects and leads Business Unit in achieving strategic goals.
- Leads coordination of resources for ongoing projects across functional areas and addresses/resolves project issues.
- Reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).
- Supervises Department Director(s), Country Leads, and Business Unit support teams.

- 8+ years’ experience developing and leading strategies to improve program effectiveness and organizational outcomes, including identifying new opportunities and creating new strategies; ability to effectively anticipate roadblocks and evolve advocacy strategies in response to new information.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team in managing multiple and often simultaneous tasks, and to create a work environment with a high level of organization, timeliness, cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and results.
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills; ability to innovate, with capacity to create or seize opportunities to improve program effectiveness and organizational outcomes.
- Recognized for Technical Expertise in one or more sectors: Education, Technology, Workforce and Inclusive Development, Youth Development, Climate Change,Civil Society and Peacebuilding, and International Exchange.
- Demonstrated Entrepreneurial leadership highly desirable, such as: founding or growing an organization, leading a movement, building new lines of business in development finance or financial literacy and inclusion.
- Demonstrated record of success in building partnerships and strategic alliances that resulted in quantifiable outcomes.
- Proven track record of driving revenue growth and resource mobilization from a diverse constituency to include restricted and unrestricted funds from foundations, governments and corporations, key public and private donors such as USAID, DFID, the Global Fund.
- Well established working relationships with key players in the national, regional and international development community.
- Experienced supervising senior leadership staff and supervising teams in complex settings including remote staff.
- Ability to adapt and provide leadership in the face of conflict, crisis, or changing priorities.
- Evidenced commitment to an interdepartmental, interdisciplinary team approach to work; strong conflict resolution and collaboration skills.
- Detail oriented and performance oriented, with a proven ability to manage operations and oversee financial aspects of an organization with multi-million-dollar budgets.
