Director, Family and Community Engagement

We believe parents are their children’s first and most important teacher, yet many families need extra help to support their children’s growth and development. While schools and communities understand the importance of effectively engaging families, they often lack the tools and resources to foster and sustain family engagement. Working closely with partner schools, Save the Children is uniquely positioned to deepen family and community engagement in isolated rural communities. To advance this work, we are seeking a fulltime Director for Family and Community Engagement. This position will play a key leadership role within Save the Children US’s Rural Education team and work collaboratively across our early learning and school-age program teams.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Family and Community Engagement Program Design and Implementation (60%):

  • Assess current family and community engagement activities and develop a coherent strategy that builds on successes and addresses gaps.
  • Develop new strategies, tools and resources to strengthen connections between families, schools and communities across the school districts where we work.
  • Develop targeted strategies to engage marginalized families, including children with challenging home environments, children living in foster care or kinship care and children with disabilities.
  • Lead data collection strategy and process to monitor program quality and assess program impact.

Provide Technical Leadership (20%):

  • Work with colleagues to build internal capacity for family and community engagement.
  • Develop and implement trainings, workshops and presentations for staff, parents and partners on topics related to family and community engagement. 
  • Represent Save the Children as a family and community engagement expert with internal and external audiences.
  • Remain current on trends, best practices and other rapidly-changing developments in family engagement.

Manage Family and Community Engagement Staff (10%):

  • Provide direct supervision for project-based family and community engagement staff.
  • Provide matrixed management for field staff working on family and community engagement, including Community Engagement Specialist and Sponsorship program staff.

Resource Development (10%):

  • Identify potential funders to support and expand family and community engagement initiatives and support proposal development.
  • Build partnerships to strengthen programs, increase reach and build credibility.
  • Ensure compliance with grant deliverables and guidelines.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 7-10 years' experience in area of expertise 
  • Working knowledge of current principles in family engagement; current local, state, and national policies and practices for family and community engagement.
  • Experience in working with school leadership, teachers, children, and other community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in family and community engagement.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative professional relationships.
